Smoking in Pennsylvania Casinos is Still Allowed, for Now

State Seal Of Pennsylvania Smoking Sign And Gambling Background

Casinos across the United States have seen their health restrictions change dramatically over the last few years. Many have been debating whether or not to continue allowing smoking inside various gambling venues across the country. New reports confirm that smoking in Pennsylvania casinos will still be allowed, for now.

Most of the casinos in the state will be pleased with this news. Now is a great time to talk about how Pennsylvania’s gambling industry might fare over the next year.

Here’s what you need to know.

Officials Continue Allowing Smoking in Pennsylvania

2020 was without a doubt the most unusual year in history for the US casino industry. All of the world’s major gambling hubs were essentially shut down for months out of the year. After reopening, various state gaming commissions implemented intense health restrictions inside casinos.

Many felt that smoking would be permanently prohibited inside major casinos. This did not happen in some of the country’s largest gambling hubs, due largely to the efforts of major casino companies. Banning smoking usually results in major drops in visitation rates and that was the last thing casinos needed at a time when revenue was at an all-time low.

Many anti-smoking groups continue working to ban smoking inside casinos. Several bills were filed in Pennsylvania that, if approved, would permanently prohibit this activity. None have been approved and most casinos in the state still allow smoking in 50% of the gaming floor. Hollywood Casinos, a major gaming operator in Pennsylvania, released a statement on this situation to the media this week.

“The real power at the end of the day on this issue rests with our customers who can vote with their pocketbooks if they feel like we’re not doing a good enough job catering to their needs,” the statement said. “It’s a balance, and one that we feel the marketplace should determine, particularly in such a competitive environment with other gaming facilities nearby and in neighboring states.”

Certain lawmakers will continue working to ban smoking in Pennsylvania casinos. For now, it will be up to individual casinos to allow or ban it. Stay tuned for more updates on this situation as the year continues.

Pennsylvania’s Gambling Revenue Hit Record-Highs in 2021

The US gambling industry thrived throughout 2021. Both casino and sports betting revenue surged around the entire country. Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest gaming industries in the country and saw its revenue figures from this industry surge over the past twelve months.

Pennsylvania’s gaming industry broke monthly records on several occasions last year. November proved to be one of the best months for this industry. Statewide gambling operators reported $432.5 million in total gross gaming revenue.

Certain forms of gambling proved to be more popular than others. Revenue earned from the state’s land-based casinos was just 3.6% higher than it was in 2019. That is surprising when considering how many new gambling venues have opened in the state over the past two years.

This state set a new monthly sports betting handle record in November. This handle came out to $761.6 million over the course of the month. Sports betting GGR came out to $63.7 million over the month, up 70% when compared to the same month in 2020.

Most analysts expect to see gambling revenue in Pennsylvania reaching new record-highs in 2022. Online casino gambling seems to be growing particular popular here. We’ll be sure to continue offering revenue reports here as the year goes on.

Major Gaming Hubs Brace for Revenue Surges

Pennsylvania is home to a huge number of casino and sports betting options. This state is not necessarily thought of as one of the country’s true gambling hubs, though. Places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City certainly fit that bill.

Las Vegas thrived throughout 2021. Gambling revenue broke records on several occasions over the course of the year. Casino companies here are expecting to see massive revenue surges in 2022 and some casino executives are pushing for online casino gambling to become available here.

Atlantic City also had a fantastic year. It helped to establish New Jersey as the sports betting capital of the country. Lawmakers here approved a PILOT bill in 2021 that helps to lower the tax rate for the casinos here and some feel this will help some of them to undergo major renovations.

Nearly every state with regulated gambling options is likely to experience revenue surges this year. Many states are likely to begin regulating sports betting, too.

Are you surprised to see that smoking in Pennsylvania is still allowed? Will this change in the future? Let us know in the comments section below.

Workers Push to Ban Smoking Inside Atlantic City Casinos

Hard Rock Atlantic City

Atlantic City is home to one of the largest casino industries in the United States. Many world-class casinos are operating in the city, most of whom have seen large jumps in revenue over the past few months. New reports claim that workers are now pushing to ban smoking inside Atlantic City casinos.

Many US gambling hubs have been pushing for a similar rule to limit smoking inside casinos. These efforts have been mostly unsuccessful. Today, we’ll talk about what could lead to Atlantic City changing its rules on smoking.

Let’s get into it!

Many of the Casino-Resorts in Atlantic City are Undergoing Renovations

Atlantic City has been a popular gambling hub for decades. It has faced its ups and downs over the years. The economic crash of 2008 nearly resulted in the collapse of the city’s entire land-based casino industry.

In 2020, Atlantic City faced perhaps its biggest test to date. It was this year that all of the casinos in the city were ordered to shut down by Governor Murphy. It took months for any of the gambling venues in the city to begin operating again.

These venues began operating again over the summer, albeit with a huge number of restrictions set in place. Fortunately, most of the rules set in place last year have now been removed. As a result, the city has been seeing a steady increase of tourists flocking in.

Many of the biggest casinos here are now set to undergo major renovations. That includes the Ocean Casino-Resort, which recently announced it plans to begin a $15 million renovation that will update the rooms and casino floor. As some are aware, this property is now the third-most-successful casino in Atlantic City.

These renovations may help to further boost tourism rates in the city. It’s an exciting moment for the casino companies here and other businesses that rely on visitors. Hope is that the upward trend continues over the rest of 2021.

Some of the workers in this city are now pushing hard to make things safer. Here’s what we know about the latest push to prohibit smoking inside the city’s gambling venues.

Workers Group is Now Pushing to Ban Smoking Inside Atlantic City Casinos

The majority of casinos around the country allow their patrons to smoke. It’s a common allowance seen in even the most expensive casino-resorts in the country. Many of these properties invest in state-of-the-art filtrations systems to limit the damage caused by smoking.

There’s no doubt that the conditions are unhealthy for the workers inside these venues, though. Some workers groups in Las Vegas have been successful in getting smoking banned on the casino floor. Unfortunately, the casinos that established this rule almost all saw a massive drop in their visitation numbers.

Casinos want to avoid losing their much-needed players. Of course, the owners of these properties are also beginning to take a closer look at the danger it presents to their workers. Many casino companies are working to address this issue in the best way possible.

New reports claim that a group of workers is now pushing to ban smoking inside Atlantic City casinos. This takes place as the city is set to begin allowing smoking again starting on Sunday. Many are now pushing hard to get this activity permanently banned, at least in some of the city’s casino-resorts.

Governor Murphy seems open to this idea. The Casino Association of New Jersey, however, claims this would put the state’s gaming industry at a disadvantage with other nearby gaming destinations.

“Going completely nonsmoking would place Atlantic City casinos at a competitive disadvantage with other nearby casinos that allow smoking,” the group said.

This is an interesting situation and one that many are likely to be torn on. We’ll be sure to continue offering updates on the situation here over the next few months!

Las Vegas Casinos Brace for Another Major Surge of Tourism

Most of the country’s land-based casino destinations are seeing impressive increases in revenue this year. That includes Las Vegas, which was the hardest economically hit city in the country in 2020. This city has rebounded and is now seeing steady growth in tourism as the months go on.

On June 24, Resorts World Las Vegas opened to the public. This is the most expensive resort ever built in the city and has been highly anticipated with gaming fans around the country. Opening day was a massive success, with at least 20,000 individuals attending its opening ceremony.

The Fourth of July weekend is just around the corner and most analysts expect another massive surge of tourism. That includes Scott Sibella, President of Resorts World LV. He claims this may end up being the best weekend in history for the city of Las Vegas.

Most casinos are getting ready to offer new entertainment options to their guests over the holiday weekend. Most have slightly increased their room rates over the weekend, as well. Hotel bookings are up and the city should experience a surge of revenue.

It may not be long before officials begin pushing to ban smoking inside casinos in Las Vegas. That won’t be easy when considering some of the power these venues hold in the city. Stay tuned for updates!

All MGM Resorts Properties Are Now Open

MGM Resorts International is one of the biggest casino companies in the United States. Over the past six months, this company has been working hard to reopen its various casinos around the world. Now, all MGM Resorts properties are open to the public.MGM Resorts Logo

Things are far from normal for MGM, though. This company is still seeing its revenue earnings significantly lower this year than it was in 2020. Today, we’re going to take a look at the final two properties left for MGM Resorts to reopen.

Let’s get into it!

Las Vegas Casino Companies Work to Bring Back Conventions

The city of Las Vegas is known primarily as a major casino and tourism destination. Over the past few decades, it’s also turned into a massive business hotspot. Many business leaders from around the country often meet here to discuss their future plans.

It’s not uncommon for massive business conventions to take place here. Hundreds of thousands of individuals used to flock to this city every year to take part in these conventions. Unfortunately, these huge meetups have been prohibited for almost all of 2020.

As most are aware, the casinos in Las Vegas all shut down back in March. It was an unprecedented move and cost the city an untold amount of revenue. Finally, in June, Governor Sisolak gave permission for the casinos to open their doors again.

Recently, several of the biggest casino companies in Las Vegas began pushing to bring back conventions. That includes MGM Resorts and Wynn Resorts, both of whom feel safely allowing conventions will help the city recover. City officials are now reviewing this request and will make a decision sometime over the next couple of weeks.

The logic here certainly makes sense. MGM Resorts properties would likely benefit greatly if conventions are allowed to resume in the city.

Fortunately, this company has now reopened all of its gambling venues.

The Final Two MGM Resorts Have Finally Reopened

The entire US casino industry has been hurting this year. Nevada wasn’t the only state to shut down its casino industry. In fact, every state around the entire country forced its casinos to close to the public.

All eyes have been on Las Vegas, though. This city remains the largest gambling destination in the United States. Even today, there are many world-class gambling venues in Las Vegas that have still not opened back up.

Don’t include MGM Resorts in that list, though. Officials within this company have been working extremely hard to get their hotel-casinos up and running again. This week, the final two MGM Resorts properties left closed finally began accepting guests again.

It’s a major accomplishment for this gambling operator. Many of the country’s largest casino companies still have numerous properties closed down. Some, including Station Casinos, recently announced that some of their closed hotel-casinos will never reopen.

It will be interesting to see MGM Resorts’ revenue reports for the month of September. New reports showed that casino revenue in Las Vegas has slowly increased each month. It seems likely that September will be the most successful month for the company since March.

Will some of the new regulations set in place here help to bring in more players.

Non-Smoking Casinos May Help to Boost Tourism in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is home to many of the very best casino-resorts in the world. For decades, smoking has been allowed in almost all the casino-resorts here. Health experts have complained about this rule and many have called for more restrictions towards smoking.

Obviously, the calls to ban smoking in Las Vegas casinos have intensified in recent months. Many have expressed fear that this is now a matter of public safety. There’s been serious discussion over whether or not to ban smoking for months.

Not long ago, news broke that Park MGM will officially prohibit smoking after reopening to the public. This venue is known as one of the most popular of MGM Resorts properties. Park MGM officially opened back up this Wednesday, September 30th.

Some believe this will help to boost visitation rates into Park MGM. Many other casino-resorts are now interested in prohibiting smoking, as well. There have been several reports that smoking will soon be prohibited in some of the other casinos on the Las Vegas Strip.

It’s already happening! Officials at the Cosmopolitan Casino-Resorts recently decided to ban smoking in all public walkways. Many have praised the move and feel it’s now time to set a blanket ban on smoking inside casinos while the pandemic remains ongoing.

MGM Resorts’ last two properties have finally opened back up to the public. Do you plan on visiting any of the company’s venues this year? Let us know in the comments section below!

Calls to Ban Smoking in Las Vegas Casinos Continue

It appears we’re just a few weeks from seeing casinos in Las Vegas reopen to the public. When these gaming venues open, however, they won’t look quite the same you might remember. Recently, requests to ban smoking in Las Vegas casinos have escalated.Holding A Cigarette

Many have asked for the major casino-resorts in Las Vegas to prohibit smoking for years. Due to the current health concerns, this may actually happen in 2020. Today, we’re going to look at what may lead to this major change.

Let’s get into it!

Major Las Vegas Casinos Plan to Reopen in June

It’s been months since all of the casinos in Las Vegas closed their doors. Governor Sisolak feared that keeping these venues would result in a surge of new Covid-19 cases in Clark County. After two months, infection rates have remained fairly low and state leaders are now looking to reopen the economy.

Casino companies in this state have been asking for permission to reopen since March. These closures have cost these companies millions of dollars every day. It’s also cost hundreds of thousands of individuals their jobs.

Fortunately, things are about to improve. Not long ago, Nevada’s Gaming Commission formally approved a set of guidelines that casino companies can use to reopen their venues. It was exactly what was needed for these companies to set an opening date.

Many of the city’s top casino-resorts now plan to open their doors next month. The Venetian, for example, plans to accept guests starting on June 1st. Several of MGM Resorts’ properties including the New York-New York Hotel-Casino and The Bellagio are also opening their doors in early June.

There will be strict measures set in place here to protect staff and guests. Everyone wants to ensure that casinos open up in the safest way possible. Interestingly, anti-smoking advocates are now calling for the gambling venues in Las Vegas to finally make a major change.

Health Professionals Call for a Ban on Smoking in Las Vegas Casinos

Las Vegas is known for having some of the most relaxed laws in the United States. That includes allowing smoking inside major casino-resorts. In recent years, many health officials have called for an end to this law, claiming it puts casino staff and non-smoking gamblers at risk.

Many have pushed against the idea to ban smoking in Las Vegas casinos, though. As many know, Las Vegas is known for the freedom that it offers visitors. Some believe that prohibiting cigarette smoking inside casinos would result in a decrease in tourism.

Now may be the time this smoking is finally banned. A new coronavirus is spreading around the country that’s known to attack the human respiratory system. Health experts have already claimed that smokers are at a much greater risk of death if infected with Covid-19.

For obvious reasons, many feel that smoking should no longer be allowed inside casinos. Anne Macincone, an associate professor of medicine in the Center for Lung Biology at the University of Washington, claims smoking can help to spread viruses and doesn’t understand how it can be done with the mask protocol set in place.

“Smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke can be respiratory irritants that can lead to coughing, and potentially spread of infection,” Macincone said.

Just about everyone agrees that allowing smoking in casinos causes health problems for staff and patrons. That’s more true now than ever. Don’t expect any of the city officials to stop this from happening anytime soon, though.

Is 2020 the Year That LV Casinos Prohibit Smoking?

It’s unlikely. As we’ve already mentioned, this isn’t the first time that many health officials have asked for a ban on smoking in Las Vegas casinos. Last year, reports surfaced that shows some of the health issues casino workers are suffering from simply from being inside these gaming venues.

That isn’t enough for casino officials to make a change. Historically speaking, a ban on smoking results in a serious loss of customers for casinos. Several casinos have prohibited smoking over the past few decades and almost all of them saw their revenue drop considerably.

Casino companies have serious power in cities like Las Vegas. It’s unlikely that any of the city officials will put an end to smoking without the blessing of these companies. Anything is possible, though.

We’re in the middle of a global pandemic and public safety is being considered now more than ever before. There’s a chance that casinos will recognize the risks that smoking presents and will decide to ban it. Some even feel casinos will have dedicated smoking areas, perhaps even contained in a single room.

The push to ban smoking in Las Vegas casinos continues. As of now, however, the major casino-resorts have not decided to make any changes. We’ll need to see how this situation plays out over the next few months.

Do you think casinos should ban smoking? Will this happen sometime in 2020? Let us know in the comments section below!

How Long Will Smoking in California Casinos Be Allowed?

California is home to a huge number of popular Native American tribal casinos. At the moment, these gambling venues are some of the only enclosed areas where smoking is permitted in the state. Many are now beginning to question how long smoking in California casinos will be allowed. California

It’s a complicated issue. On one hand, the ability to smoke is attractive to many gamblers. On the other, it’s damaging the health of casino workers.

Let’s look at what exactly is going on here.

California Continues to Implement New Smoking Laws

The state of California is known for having some of the strictest smoking laws in the country. It’s not entirely surprising. Smoking has been banned inside most establishments here for many years. As we’ve already mentioned, only casinos still allow patrons to smoke indoors.

It seems like every few months, a new smoking law is introduced in California. Many of these new laws have to do with vaping. Underage vaping is becoming a serious issue around the country. Never before have so many young people become addicted to nicotine.

Juul, the makers of the most popular electronic cigarette devices in the US, is at the center of major controversy. Not long ago, officials in San Francisco, where the company is based, banned all Juul products. Some feel a state-wide ban is on the horizon.

In October, lawmakers in California also decided to ban smoking and vaping at all state beaches. This ban applies to state parks, as well. Some were quick to push against this new law. Others felt it would help to crack down on underage smoking.

Smoking in California casinos is still permitted. Still, many are now calling for this to become banned. Based on new reports on the impact of smoking on Las Vegas casino workers, this may actually come to fruition.

Smoking in California Casinos May Soon Become Banned

There are a huge number of land-based casinos in California. This is all thanks to the US Supreme Court approving the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. It’s a federal law allowing Native American tribes to operate gambling venues on sovereign land.

These casinos have escaped several regulations over the years. They are able to implement laws that are not permitted in other parts of the state. This is especially true with laws on smoking.

The times may be changing, though. Not long ago, a report detailed the health effects that second-hand smoking has on casino workers in Las Vegas. According to the report, many of these workers are now suffering from life-threatening ailments.

It’s a troubling finding that may lead to major change. In California, where smoking is becoming more and more taboo, casinos may be forced to ban it. Tribal leaders are likely to push against this for as long as possible. Smoking in California casinos helps to bring in a huge number of tourists.

Narinder Dhaliwal, director of California’s Clean Air Project, believes it’s time for this ban to be implemented. She also recognizes that it could potentially have an impact on their revenue.

“These are businesses, and even though smoking is a public health issue near and dear to our hearts, we also have to remember that they have to consider the economic impact on the tribe,” Dhaliwal said.

Las Vegas Remains the Smoking Hub Of the Country

In time, it’s likely that smoking will be banned inside these gambling venues. California is working hard to cut down on all rates of smoking. It will ultimately be up to gamblers and casinos to make this ban a reality.

In case this happens, smokers in California can still find refuge in Las Vegas. This city is home to many of the country’s best casino-resorts. In almost all of them, smoking is still permitted.

There are even a huge number of fantastic bars that allow smoking in Las Vegas. Some are small, quaint bars for cigar smokers. Others are large, grandiose cocktail bars that still allow customers to light up.

Bronson Frick, director of advocacy for Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, claims that many workers are calling for smoking in California to become banned.

“The casino workforce is the job sector most exposed to cigarette smoke in the U.S.,” he said.

Only time will tell when a ban like this will be implemented. We’ll also need to wait and see how this new rule would impact the casino’s revenue.

Workers Continue Push for Smoke-Free LV Casinos

There are a huge number of casinos in Las Vegas. Smoking is permitted throughout just about all of them. Recently, however, workers suffering from the health effects of the smoke-filled atmosphere have begun to push for smoke-free LV casinos.

Holding A Cigarette

If these plans are approved, it would be a huge shift in the culture of the city. Smoking has been allowed inside casinos here for decades. Let’s take a quick look at exactly what’s going on.

Smoking Laws in Las Vegas, Explained

Las Vegas is the city people love to let loose in. The 24-hour bars and ability to smoke indoors attracts many party-goers. Unsurprisingly, many are beginning to question just how smart it is to keep the same set of smoking laws intact.

In 2006, lawmakers officially approved the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act. Essentially, this set of laws made it illegal to light up a cigarette indoors. Of course, this act does not necessarily apply to the Las Vegas Strip.

This part of the city is home to many incredible casinos. Under the revised statutes 202.2483, city officials detail exactly where smoking is permitted.

  • Strip clubs and brothels
  • Tobacco stores
  • Stand-alone bars and taverns that are 21 and over
  • Any area inside casinos where loitering of minors is prohibited, typically near gaming tables and slot machines
  • Some convention centers
  • Outside areas of restaurants

Fortunately for non-smokers, not every venue in this city allows people to light up. Just about all hotel lobbies forbid it. The majority of shops, restaurants, movie theatres, and nightclubs also prohibit smoking. The same laws apply for e-cigarettes in Las Vegas.

More and more individuals are beginning to push for smoke-free LV casinos right now. A recent article on the health implications for workers was just recently released and the results are a little startling.

The Push for Smoke-Free LV Casinos Continues

Casino workers have long-complained about the conditions they’re subjected to. It’s well-known that second-hand smoke is just as unhealthy as smoking. Many have complained about the health effects they are suffering from while working in these gambling venues.

Several of these workers are now dealing with major issues. Teresa Price recently spoke with the Las Vegas Sun about her condition. She claims to have taken a medical leave after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and heart disease.

“I love the job and meeting new people every day,” she said. “But the environment is unhealthy.”

Some are claiming that smoke-free LV casinos aren’t necessary. They credit the advanced air filtration systems in place that help to protect workers and guests. Not everyone feels this is the case, though.

The CDC even claims that no air-cleaning system can completely eliminate the negative health effects of smoking and second-hand smoke.

“The particle size of the constituents of smoke are so small that these air filters don’t do a thing,” said Chris Pritsos, director of the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Nevada, Reno and author of several studies on second-hand smoke in casinos. “They might knock it down 10% or so, but that does not stop the harmful effects.”

We’ll need to wait and see how city officials feel about the recent push for smoke-free LV casinos. As more reports of health issues arise, these officials may have no choice but to make a change.
