Plans for a Gambling Venue in Southeast MA Take a Step Forward

For now, only three casinos are operating in the state of Massachusetts. One is located in Everett, near Boston. The other is found in Springfield and another is located in Plainville. Recently, officials in a different part of the state began pushing for the right to open another casino. It may be some time before a gambling venue in Southeast MA is able to operate, though.Massachusetts State Symbol

This state’s gambling industry is in an unusual place. Today, we’re going to talk about how the current casinos here are performing. We’ll also look at the likelihood of this new casino opening in the future.

Let’s get into it!

The Casino Competition in Massachusetts Continues

Not long ago, Massachusetts had no gambling venues operating. Lawmakers here took steps to ban traditional casino gambling. Finally, in 2011, state officials passed a set of laws to allow three land-based casinos to start operating.

The first to open was the MGM Springfield, run by MGM Resorts International. At first, this venue was expected to be hugely successful. As time went on, this casino resort began to lose a significant amount of revenue.

Part of the reason for this revenue decline was the opening of the Encore Boston Harbor, owned by Wynn Resorts. This new casino captured a huge portion of the state’s gambling market, including many individuals who previously made bets inside the MGM Springfield. Since opening, this venue has earned more revenue than all of the other state’s gaming properties.

Things began improving for MGM Springfield in January. That month, this property saw its revenue increase by $2 million. The Plainridge Park Casino, MA’s third gaming venue, had a revenue increase of $1 million.

Not everyone is pleased with the way things are. Many individuals in parts of the state without a gambling venue feel the laws set in place are unfair. Here’s what’s happening with this situation.

New Push for a Gambling Venue in Southeast MA

As of now, only three casinos are legally able to operate in Massachusetts. Some state officials feel this is unfair. Back in October, a new bill was introduced to allow a new gambling venue in Southeast MA to begin operating.

The South Shore Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recently endorsed this bill. Peter Forman, South Shore Chamber President and CEO, commented on these plans to the media this week.

“We find it troubling that Southeastern Massachusetts is almost effectively blocked under current law from even considering a gaming option,” he said. “Your legislation will enable an open and competitive process that will lead to the best possible solution for the region, one that compliments the tourism industry and the region’s economic strength.”

Promoting tourism in this area is one of the main reasons why people are pushing for a gambling venue in Southeast MA. Under the current bill, the state’s Gaming Commission could offer a slots-only license for this new property.

There are still many steps that need to be taken for this venue to be approved. Most analysts feel it will not begin operating for at least a year. It will be interesting to see how lawmakers feel about these new plans.

Coronavirus Already Affects Massachusetts Casinos

Back in December, a new coronavirus called Covid-19 emerged in Wuhan, China. Since that time, the virus has spread to countries all over the world and has affected more than 100,000 individuals. The death toll from Covid-19 is now nearing 4,000 individuals.

There are serious concerns that the virus will become uncontainable. As of now, efforts to prevent its spread have been largely ineffective. Unsurprisingly, many people are choosing not to travel due to fears of this virus.

It’s also taking a serious toll on the country’s gambling industry. People are less willing to gamble inside casinos, where a huge number of people are crammed into a small area. According to some reports, the casinos in Massachusetts are already experiencing revenue drops due to the coronavirus.

Interestingly, more people are now choosing to play casino games online. Sites like Bovada, which offer a huge number of different casino games online, are growing more popular every single month. This trend is likely to continue as the virus spreads.

We’ll need to wait and see whether or not the gambling venue in Southeast MA is approved. Stay tuned for updates over the next few months!

A New Glendale Casino is Opening to the Public This Week

Arizona’s casino industry continues to expand. On Wednesday, a brand new Glendale casino officially opens its doors to the public. Based on several reports, this will be one of the best new gaming venues in the state.Desert Diamond Casino West Valley

There’s a lot happening here. Several lawmakers continue the push to have sports betting legalized in Arizona. Today, we’re going to talk about what this new casino has to offer and look at the road to make sports betting legal here.

Arizona’s Gambling Laws, Explained

Today, Arizona has a large and highly successful casino industry. This wasn’t always the case, though. Just a few decades ago, this state banned almost all forms of gambling.

In 1988, the Supreme Court passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. This allows Native American tribes throughout the country to operate gambling venues on sovereign land. Not long after this law was passed, tribes in Arizona began requesting permission to open casinos.

Unfortunately, lawmakers here didn’t make things easy. Politicians began fighting the tribes in court, arguing they had no right to open casinos under state law. This legal battle lasted for five years and finally, tribes were granted permission to operate casinos.

There are now a huge number of gambling venues spread all around the state. All of these casinos are operated by tribes. They help to bring in millions of dollars to the state every single year through taxes.

A brand new Glendale casino is opening up this week. Here’s what it has to offer!

New Glendale Casino Finally Opens on Wednesday

As we’ve already mentioned, there are a huge number of fantastic casino gaming options available in Arizona right now. On Wednesday, another is opening up. The Desert Diamond Casino West Valley officially opens to the public and gambling fans have a lot to look forward to.

Construction on this venue first started in 2017. It’s now a 1.2 million-square-foot facility that features a massive range of different gambling options.

Gamblers here can choose from 1,100 slot machines, 36 poker tables, 48 blackjack tables, five different restaurants, and a VIP lounge. This makes it one of the biggest casinos in the state. The Talking Stick Resort & Casino in Scottsdale, for example, offers only 900 slot machines.

It’s operated by the Tohono O’odham Nation, who believe this will be an extremely popular gambling venue. Treena Parvello, director of Government Relations and Communications for the nation, commented on the opening of the new Glendale casino to the media this week.

“This has been a long time coming,” she said. “We’re excited to finally unveil the next phase for this unique amenity in the West Valley, which is creating jobs and opportunities. This would not have been possible without the leadership of the Tohono O’odham Nation, and the guidance of the Enterprise Management Board.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony officially begins at 8 pm on Wednesday. Tribal leaders expect a huge turnout for opening day. Hopefully, venues like this one can soon begin offering sports betting options.

When Will Sports Betting Be Allowed in Arizona?

This is the million-dollar question. In May of 2018, PASPA was officially struck down. This instantly gave every state in the country the ability to legalize sports betting. In the past, only Nevada was legally allowed to offer sports betting options.

Today, 21 states now have regulated sports betting options. Many more have bills being reviewed to open their sports betting markets. Arizona is one of the states currently looking into legislation to legalize sports gambling.

Several lawmakers presented HB 1158 to legalize sports betting in 2019. It failed to get approved before the end of the year. That isn’t stopping this push, though.

The main issue with bill 1158 was that it went against tribal rules. It seems that State Senators are now looking for an amendment that allows sports betting to be done throughout the state. Many analysts believe that 2020 is the year that sports betting becomes available here.

This state’s gambling industry is still growing. A new Glendale casino is opening this week and more will likely be constructed in the near future.

Plans for a New Casino in Oklahoma Are Revealed

Oklahoma’s legal battle against Native American Tribes continues. It doesn’t appear to be stopping tribes from expressing interest in opening casinos here. The Choctaw Nation has revealed plans for a new casino in Oklahoma this week.

Choctaw Nation Banner

There are a staggering number of Native American casinos in this state. The gambling industry here is showing no signs of slowing down. Let’s look at the state’s battle with tribes and what new casino plans have just been revealed.

Lawmakers and Tribes Continue to Quarrel

Oklahoma has the third-largest number of Native American Tribes in the United States after Alaska and California. In 1988, the US Supreme Court passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, allowing all Native American Tribes to operate casinos on sovereign land. Immediately, a huge number of tribes in this state decided to open their own casinos.

Over the past two decades, Oklahoma has developed one of the largest tribal casino markets in the country. Since the 90s, tribes have been required to pay between 4% and 10% of their revenue in taxes to the state. In 2018, tribal casinos brought in more than $139 million in taxes.

Recently, however, Governor Kevin Stitt has asked for lawmakers in the state to reevaluate the current tax structure. He simply wants to ensure that the state is earning what it should from these gambling venues. Interestingly, Stitt voiced this opinion to the media, instead of lawmakers directly.

His new idea did not sit well with tribal leaders in the state. Many tribes immediately began pointing out the contribution that they make to the state. Increasing tax rates would go against an agreement that’s been in place for decades, they argue.

Negotiations are continuing to take place between the tribes and state officials. It’s unclear exactly how this situation will unfold.

Choctaw Nation Unveils Plans for a New Casino in Oklahoma

Despite the unknown future tax rates for casino operators, many tribes are still looking to open a gambling venue in Oklahoma. This week, the Choctaw Nation revealed its plans for a new casino in Oklahoma. More specifically, a casino in Matteson, at Lincoln Highway and Harlem Avenue. Many are excited to hear what may be coming here.

The town of Matteson is currently fighting for its opportunity to host a casino. Plans to construct a $300 million gambling venue was presented to the Village Board. A vote on the new casino will be made on October 21st.

Sheila Chalmers-Currin, Village President of Matteson, commented on the decision to open a casino in this city to the media.

“I believe this project will be an asset not just to Matteson, but to the entire Southland Region,” she said. “After interviewing multiple casino operators, we felt the team led by the Choctaw Nation provided the best combination of experience, vision, community engagement and a financially feasible plan.”

The plan, which the Choctaw Nation would be helping with, calls for 2,000 gaming positions, a high-end restaurant and food hall, a 200-room hotel and 36,000 square feet for small conventions, concerts or similar events. The proposed site covers 35 acres and could include another 15 to 20.

This tribe already operates 22 casinos around the state. Soon, it may have a 23rd.

Oklahoma Still Hesitant to Approve Sports Betting

For many years, only Nevada was legally allowed to offer sports betting in the United States. Finally, in May of 2018, the Supreme Court struck down PASPA. Almost immediately afterward, several states began presenting plans to legalize and regulate the sports betting industry.

Today, 19 states have chosen to legalize sports gambling. Many more likely will over the next few months. A bill was presented in Oklahoma earlier this year to allow “sports pools.” Unfortunately, the bill failed to get approved before the state’s legislative session.

Many believe that sports betting will be approved in this state next year. It seems extremely likely, as the state would likely earn millions every month from this industry.

Plans for a new casino in Oklahoma have been presented. We’re likely to see even more gambling venues open here over the next several years.

Officials Raise Concerns About New Casino in Norfolk, VA

For years, the Pamunkey Tribe of Virginia has discussed plans to open a casino. Recently, the tribe agreed to pay $10 million for a plot of land in Norfolk, where the proposed casino will be constructed. This week, several Virginia city officials raised their concerns over the plans to construct a new casino in Norfolk.

There are still several steps the Pamunkey Tribe needs to take before this casino will be approved. Today, we’re going to look at what we know about these casino plans so far. We’ll also look at why officials are hesitant to approve the plans.

Pamunkey Tribe Eager to Open Their First Casino

The Pamunkey Tribe is one of 11 Virginia Native American tribes. It’s the first federally-recognized tribe in the state. For years, heads of this tribe have pushed hard to open a casino venue. Unfortunately, Virginia has a restrictive set of gambling laws that bans full-scale casinos from operating.

Interestingly, the state does allow certain forms of casino-style games. Today, there are several gambling venues in Virginia that offer electronic slot-style games. These machines have grown extremely popular in the state and have generated major revenue.

Earlier this year, several Virginia lawmakers presented a new bill to significantly expand the state’s gambling operations. If approved, traditional casino games such as table games and slot machines will be fully legalized. It will be until 2021 until these plans are officially set into law.

That isn’t stopping the Pamunkey Tribe from working to have casino plans approved. Earlier this month, the tribe agreed to pay $10 million for a plot of waterfront land in Norfolk. The tribe has also presented plans to construct a massive $700 million casino-resort in this city.

Unfortunately, several city officials are raising their concerns with a new casino in Norfolk opening its doors.

Councilmembers Weigh Pros and Cons of New Casino in Norfolk

For many, the idea of a fully-operating casino in Norfolk is extremely exciting. It’s clear that a casino would help to generate revenue earnings for the city. Others worry about the impact it will have on emergency services, local businesses, and crime.

In an official city meeting on Monday, councilmember Andria McClellan raised several questions. She wants to know exactly how much the city will receive in tax revenue. She’s also pointing out the fact that no study has been conducted on exactly how much money a casino here will generate, and what the impact will be on city residents.

Several studies on these matters are being conducted, yet the results will not become available until after the council votes on whether or not to approve the tribe’s purchase of the land tonight. Councilman Tommy Smigiel states that the council is taking this decision very seriously. He’s taking public opinion into account.

Many Norfolk residents are unhappy with the decision to open a casino in the city. Civic League secretary Lorraine Connaughton believes the public simply doesn’t have enough information to make a decision.

“It really came across as people were skeptical … and that they were being railroaded on a deal that they quite frankly don’t have enough information on,” she said.

We’ll need to wait and see how the city council decides to approach the plans to construct a new casino in Norfolk.

Gambling Options Available in Virginia Right Now

As we mentioned earlier, Virginia has a set of restrictive laws towards the gambling industry. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to play your favorite casino games in this state. Today, there are several fantastic VA online casinos that are available to residents. Most of them offer a huge range of different gambling options.

Lawmakers in Virginia have not yet taken steps to regulate the online casino industry. Unlike several states such as Delaware and New Jersey, Virginia has set no direct laws on internet casino sites. Interestingly, more people in Virginia are choosing to play at US casino sites every month.

The state of Virginia appears very close to allowing traditional land-based casinos. Before long, lawmakers here may also choose to regulate internet casinos. States with state-regulated online casino platforms are earning millions of dollars a month by taxing these websites’ earnings.

Over the next few months, we’ll see whether or not the new casino in Norfolk will be approved. Perhaps in time, several brick and mortar casinos will begin opening around the state.
