Fonner Pak recently announced that it is waiting for the Nebraska Legislature’s final approval so that it can commence the construction of a temporary gambling facility while the permanent casino building at its location is still under construction.

According to Fonner Park Chief Executive Officer Chris Kotulak, they are expecting the passage of the rules and regulations for the casino operations in Nebraska to be passed later this month or before the end of February.

When those regulations are signed off, they will then begin the construction of the temporary casino facility which will be used while the permanent building is being put up. Said Kotulak:

“It’s going to be the most beautiful metal structure you’ve seen with neon and plush carpet and chairs and parking. It will be gorgeous — as gorgeous as a metal structure can be.”

Temporary Facility

The construction of the permanent casino is expected to be completed in two years and during that period, Fonner Park says it will build a temporary site at the north side of the park in the western third of the campground. The temporary facility is expected to be built within four months after the Nebraska Legislature approves the rules and regulations.

Last December 17th, the Nebraska Gaming and Racing Commission approved the the rules for casinos at the state’s horse racing track. But those rules must still be reviewed by Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson and Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts. A bill must also be passed in the Legislature.

Grand Island Casino Resort

In April 2021, Fonner Park selected Elite Casino Resorts among nine submitted bids as its casino partner. As such, the Iowa-based company will construct and manage the proposed $100 million Grand Island Casino Resort at Fonner Park.

The said casino will have 650 slot machines with extra space to expand to a maximum of 850 slots. There will also be 20 gambling tables, a sports bar, a sportsbook, and a live entertainment venue. Also part of the resort is a 116-boutique hotel with luxury suites and rooms with balconies. The hotel will have in indoor and outdoor pool as well as a full service spa and salon.
