PokerStars Launches Online Sports Betting in NJ Via BetStars

Summary: New Jersey now has eight online/mobile operators offering sports betting services thanks to the introduction of BetStars, the sports betting brand of PokerStars.

Taking a break from online casino and poker action, New Jersey, as well as other states in the US, are working on their sports betting services. Since mid-May, states across the US have been busy integrating regulations for sports betting or passing legislation, after the US Supreme Court ruled that a federal ban on the activity was no longer valid. New Jersey has been at the forefront of the sports betting boom, with yet another operator now offering online services in the state.

Enter PokerStars

PokerStarsThe PokerStars brand is synonymous with poker, but they also offer casino and sports betting services. In New Jersey, the brand has an online casino and poker room, so it was only natural for the company to focus their efforts on sports betting as well. BetStars is the sports betting arm of the company that went live this past week, offering an online/mobile platform for sports bettors.

With the launch, BetStars becomes the 8th online/mobile platform to enter the market in the state. Currently, BetStars is only offering their platform via Android mobile devices. The iOS platform works via the PokerStars NJ client. Standalone platforms for iOS as well as browser based options should be released in the near future.

Internationally, the BetStars brand is a highly recognizable. The Stars Group, parent company of PokerStars, BetStars, etc., already operates several sports betting options in jurisdictions around the world. After years of service in other markets, BetStars knows what they are doing and will provide a solid choice for sports betting in New Jersey.

The platform offers players a strong selection of sports to choose from as well as bet types. Players will even have access to in-play betting. For some events, betting starts at just one penny, making placing sport wagers super affordable.

PokerStars operates in New Jersey thanks to the license of the Resorts AC casino. Currently, PokerStars now operates PokerStars NJ, the online poker room, PokerStars Casino and BetStars. Players can now use a single account to access all PokerStars content, making it easy to wager, deposit and withdraw funds.

Nice Variety for Players

Sports bettors in New Jersey now have a nice variety of sports betting platforms to choose from. While land-based sports betting launched first, it is the online option that will truly allow the gaming industry to flourish. Players want to be able to enjoy their gaming online with eight operators already offering services, sports betting via the internet is a breeze.

Back in August, the first full month of sports betting operations, online sports betting revenues accounted for one third of the total number. At that time, only three operators were offering online services. Now that eight companies are in the mix, that number should increase significantly in the coming weeks. It is anticipated that online sports betting will outpace the land based gaming, providing the state with much needed tax revenues.

Current sportsbooks available in New Jersey include:

  • Bet Online
  • 888
  • William Hill
  • BetStars
  • SugarHouse
  • Caesars
  • playMGM
  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel

With online gaming, each licensed property in the state can create as many as three online partnerships. With the sports betting industry, this means that many more online sportsbooks can be launched in the state. We shall watch in the coming weeks just how many more sportsbooks go live online and how it affects the overall industry. It will not be surprising to see gaming revenues skyrocket as more operators go online.
