Casino Employees Receive Training for Drug Recognition and Anti-Human Trafficking

As a casino employee, one will receive a great deal of training. Depending on the position of employment, training will be provided based on the job at hand, types of customers one will deal with, etc. Most casino employees do not plan on learning how to recognize drugs or signs of human trafficking, but it is a problem that exists. The Oneida Nation recently provided such training to their employees in the hopes of providing a safer environment within their casinos.

Comprehensive Training

The Oneida’s casino and hospitality industry recently saw over 500 individuals receive training in drug recognition courses and anti-human trafficking. The classes were provided by the Wisconsin Department of Justice along with the state Native American Drug and Gang Initiative Task Force. Police want the casino employees to provide assistance and learn how to recognize such issues that threaten the region.

According to Brad Schimel, the Wisconsin Attorney General, the training provided helps tribal law enforcement with partners that will help to keep a close eye on the community and remove any advantages that traffickers may have as well as drug networks. Most of the time, members of the public have no idea how to spot drug interactions or trafficking instances. With proper training, employees of the casino will know what to look for and can alert authorities when they spot something suspicious.

Reasoning Behind the Training

Employees who took the training courses were taught the signs of illegal activity. This included how older men might be the company of younger women, customers may pay with large amounts of cash or pre-paid credit cards, or there will be many people visiting and going in and out of one hotel room, with do not disturb signs in place.

In the region, casinos and hotels can be home bases for such crimes as they are areas of entertainment where large amounts of traffic are present, with out-of-town guests being the majority. Casino employees along with hotel employees will see a variety of people on a regular basis so no one individual will stand out. However, with the training, such employees will now know what to look for and be able to recognize any strange or abnormal behavior.

The police have spoken to employees and have explained that even if some behavior seems odd, it is better to report it and have the situation checked out and cleared rather than go unnoticed and something bad happen.

The employees were taught how to recognize illegal drugs as well as what type of precautions to take if they encounter drugs. Employees were also explained as to how individuals will act when using controlled substances.

The training courses involved both illegal drugs and human trafficking information as the two usually go hand in hand. With the information that was learned, the employees of the casinos will hopefully feel better prepared to handle a difficult situation and be able to recognize when something is wrong.

By having more eyes in the areas where such activities can be present, the police are hoping to put an end to such illicit behaviors and protect Wisconsin citizens. Other casinos and hotels will be undertaking similar training in the future to continue to educate employees and provide insight into these criminal activities.

It will be interesting to see if the training results in arrests made or more activity found taking place at such venues, giving police more opportunity to fight such activities as illegal drug use and human trafficking.
