Hollywood Casino at Greektown will become just the latest change to Michigan’s gaming market. Recently, the state approved the World Series of Poker (WSOP) to operate an online casino in the Wolverine State. Also, Michigan was approved to join the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA).

Casino Renamed as Hollywood Casino at Greektown

Three years after being sold, the Greektown Casino in Detroit is finally being rebranded. Penn National Gaming purchased the venue in 2019. Starting May 1st, the casino hotel will be renamed the Hollywood Casino at Greektown.

Greektown Casino originally opened in 2000 and has gone through several owners since. It was originally owned by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. In 2008, the tribe was forced to file for bankruptcy and the casino was sold to two investment groups. In 2013, it was sold again. This time it was purchased by Rock Gaming, which was eventually rebranded as JACK Entertainment.

JACK Entertainment planned to change the name of the casino. The company planned to call the venue the “JACK Detroit Casino-Hotel Greektown”. However, the rebranding project fell through. After just six years of ownership, the casino was sold again. Now, Penn National Gaming will attempt to successfully rebrand and hold onto the casino hotel.

Other Renovations Included in the Project

As part of the rebranding, Penn National Gaming also funded massive renovations to the venue. The lobby underwent $30 million worth of renovations, including adding a new Dunkin’ Donuts location. Other dining options in the casino hotel were also renovated and had their menus updated.

The hotel rooms at the Detroit casino also underwent a complete redesign. Penn National Gaming invested heavily in improving the parking options at the casino as well. In total, the company spent $1 million to add a new VIP parking garage. Guests can access the new parking garage from the upper level of the gaming floor.

Players at the Hollywood Casino at Greektown will also get to use a new cashless gaming app. Guests will be able to use the mychoice rewards app to gamble without needing to carry cash with them. The app will also keep track of the player’s winnings and their rewards points.

Other Changes to the Michigan Gaming Industry

The Greektown casino is not the only recent change in the state’s legal gaming market. Michigan recently approved the WSOP to launch its online casino in the state. WSOP was the third online casino to be approved by Michigan lawmakers.

So far, Michigan’s online gaming operators have been having a great start to 2022. Last month, online gaming operators regarded a record high in gaming revenue. The total for the month of March was north of $130 million. Online sportsbooks in the state generated a betting handle of $475 million. That mark is the highest in the state’s history outside of the NFL season.

Online gaming revenue could continue to increase as well. The MSIGA recently approved Michigan to join the agreement. If the Michigan Gaming Control Board agrees, then Michigan could begin engaging in inter-stating online gambling. This would greatly increase the potential player pool for the three online casinos in Michigan.

Conclusion

After spending millions in renovations, Penn National Gaming is nearly ready to officially rebrand its Detroit casino. Starting next month, the Greektown Casino will officially become the Hollywood Casino at Greektown. The venue also received updates to its dining venues, parking options, and more.

The Greektown Casino has had a tumultuous last decade. During that time, the venue has changed hands multiple times. Now, with the worst of the pandemic hopefully behind us, Penn National Gaming appears to have righted the ship. If so, then the newly revamped casino could be a major player in a growing Michigan gaming market.
