Hollywood Casino in Chesapeake Overlook Parkway was one of two Maryland casinos recently given clearance by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission to operate sports betting in the state.
The Perryville casino joined Oceans Down Casino in Berlin, Maryland as the latest of the 17 designated sports betting operators to have their application forwarded to the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission. Previously, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission already gave the go signal to MGM National Harbor, Live! Casino & Hotel, and Baltimore’s Horseshoe Casino.
Said Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin:
“We’ve approved five facilities, and our work is ongoing. We’ll continue sending applications to the SWARC so that it can make awards and sports wagering can launch by late fall. It’s what the public wants and expects, and we’re doing everything we can to deliver it.”
All Designated Sports Betting Operators are Reviewed by MLGCC
The casinos and sports betting companies who are designated to operate sports betting in the state are being reviewed by the Maryland Lottery andGaming Control Commission to ensure that licenses are current and internal controls are established. Maryland voters approved legal sports betting during a ballot initiative in 2020. Gov Hogan signed the bill into a law last May.
Hollywood Casino was among the 17 pre-qualified entities to operate legal Maryland sports betting because it already holds a gaming license in the state. The Perryville casino has already named Barstool Sports as its sports betting skin.
SWARC October 14 Meeting Was Cancelled
Last August, the SWARC unanimously voted that the Maryland Lottery and Gaming’s recommendations would be sufficient to for awarding the licenses. Under the state’s sports betting law, the SWARC has the authority to award as many as 30 sports betting licenses.
The SWARC was expected to approve the first set of licenses during their October 14th meeting. However, that meeting was cancelled and the Commission has not announced a new date for its next meetings. However, the state said that the applications and processes are being expedited so that sports betting could launch in time for residents to place bets on the Super Bowl and March Madness.
