Del Lago Resort & Casino Open for Business
New York welcomes a new casino as the del Lago Resort & Casino opens today.
When a new casino opens in the United States, it is always an exciting time. Across the nation, new gaming venues are currently being constructed in such states as New York, Massachusetts and more. In New York, the state is actually just beginning to offer casino gaming. The state passed legislation only a few years ago to allow commercial casinos to be created in the state and one of the license winners has opened for operation.
Open for Business
The del Lago Resort & Casino is now open for business and offering players a lovely gaming venue featuring 2,000 slot machines and 89 table games. The casino is located in the city of Tyre in Seneca County and has been in development for some time. The new gaming venue opened yesterday to a ribbon cutting involving the Governor of the state Andrew Cuomo.
With the grand opening, visitors were able to see the 94,000 square foot gaming floor for the very first time as well as enjoy retail space, restaurant dining, a performance space with 2,400 seats and more. The project was developed on 85 acres of land and took over one million construction hours to complete. Employment now sits at around 1,500 permanent positions within the venue.
Cuomo commented on the opening of the gaming venue by stating that new jobs and increased economic activity are now on the horizon thanks to the opening of the new del Lago resort. The opening of the venue puts the Finger Lakes region one step closer to becoming a transformed region. As New Yorkers have been going outside the state for entertainment, the del Lago helps to keep revenues in the region as well as bring in consumers from neighboring states.
The Gaming Development Act
It was in 2013 that the Upstate New York Gaming and Economic Development Act was mandated in the state, an act created by Governor Cuomo. The act stated that all revenue from the del Lago be returned to localities. The casino will provide 5% of the tax revenue to Tyre while another 5% will go towards Seneca County as these are the host areas of the casino. The 5% more will go to Wayne and Schuyler counties as well as Broome, Tompkins and Chemung each so that 80% remains. This larger percentage will be distributed throughout the state to help support public education programs as well as tax relief for residents.
Commenting on opening day, Jeff Babinski, the General Manager and Executive Vice President for del Lago stated that the day has been coming for quite some time and the company is thrilled to be opening their doors to the public for the very first time. According to Babinski, the casino was created for the customers, the community and the Finger Lakes region. The mission of the del Lago was to act as a gateway for the region and work to leverage the natural beauty and unique offerings to help with tourism efforts.
The casino should be able to be help the state see quality revenues and has already helped bring jobs to the area. During the construction phase, 1,800 positions were filled. As we mentioned earlier, 1,500 are currently employed and an additional 200 to 300 employees will be hired when the hotel and spa open during the summer months. Not only will more jobs be available but the property will offer more for visitors.
It has been projected that the resort and the casino will bring in around 3.2 million visitors each year. There will eventually be four commercial casinos operating in the state, with the Tioga Downs and del Lago already in business. The Montreign and Rivers casino will open after construction is complete and provide with state with around $325 million in gaming taxes.
