All US-Based Casinos Will Be Closed By Wednesday

Unfortunately, things just keep getting worse for the casino industry. It has been announced that all US casinos will be closed down as of Wednesday. This is in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Sorry We're Closed Sign

The American Gaming Association reported on Monday that more than 900 casinos had closed around the US. It has now been announced that 100% of casinos around the US will be closed.

This is a massive blow to the commercial casino industry in the US in terms of revenue. This couldn’t have come at a worse time, as casinos around the US were preparing for one of the busiest seasons of the year: March Madness.

Joe Asher, CEO of William Hill US told ESPN

“Obviously, it’s unprecedented times. It’s tough right now, timing was bad, wiping out March Madness. Losing the [NCAA men’s basketball] tournament was a real punch in the gut. But, look, a punch in the gut hurts, but you recover from it.”

The closure of all these casinos around the US will diminish the number of jobs in the US by over 640,000 people.

When Will US Casinos Reopen?

This is a very difficult question to answer. As of right now, places are still continuing to quarantine close to aid in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

US President Donald Trump has made a statement today claiming that he wants to reopen businesses by Easter (April 11, 2020). People are very divided on this statement, as most of the country is when Donald Trump says anything.

Do I think that casinos will be reopened by Easter? I would certainly hope so, but I’m not holding my breath. I think personally that we will be stuck in quarantine for a little while longer, as many health officials have stated they are not sure when this could be over.

Here’s my simple advice: be patient.

I know that’s not what you want to hear, but that’s the best advice I can give at this time. You can always try casino games and other types of gambling that will still be offered from the comfort of your own home.

Online Casinos are Also Suffering

With no sports to bet on with everyone being closed, even the online casinos are struggling. Online casinos and gambling sites are being forced to shift their main focus to casino games and poker.

But with no sports actively competing, there is a lot of revenue being lost and casinos alike are scrambling to pick up the pieces.

Online casinos have gone as far as to start offering betting odds on the weather. Yes, you read that right: the weather. This is a screenshot taken from US-based sportsbook BetNow:

Crazy times we live in, right? It’s funny, but it at least gives people options!

In Closing

It looks like us Americans and people around the world for that matter will have to be happy with betting on weather, playing casino games or poker for the foreseeable future.

Everyone stay safe out there. Hopefully, everyone understands that decisions like this are not easy to make and are not made lightly. People’s jobs are being lost and revenue is decreasing for the casino industry.

Stay safe everyone and please stop hoarding toilet paper.
