Roulette Variants

Roulette first came into existence long ago, sometime in the 17th century, and it quickly gained popularity. Since that time, there have been several variations that have been created, and they have been huge hits with gamblers far and wide. Even to this day, Roulette is one of the most popular table casino games found in casinos.

Read on to find out more about the different roulette games you’ll find at online and land-based casinos. Should you play American Roulette, French Roulette or European Roulette? You can learn more about these games in this article and decide for yourself.

American Roulette vs. European Roulette

If you haven’t paid close attention, you might not have known there are two types of roulette wheels in casinos, the European Roulette wheel and the American Roulette wheel. This difference, albeit a small one, actually make quite a big difference to the house edge, which we will discuss in greater detail below.

The European Roulette game is also known as a single zero roulette and has some similarity with the American version of Roulette. The rules are the same as for the American Roulette variant, however, they differ in the number of slots on the wheel to place your bets on.

The most notable difference is the single and double zero on the American Roulette table, while the European Roulette wheel has only one zero. The numbers in an American wheel usually appear in pairs and are opposite one another. In contrast, a European roulette wheel has randomized numbers. In a nutshell, if you take away the double zero on the American roulette table, you’re basically left with a European table.

In the American Roulette wheel, the black/red spots, as well as the even/odd spots are basically the first and the last eighteen spots. They are situated evenly to a single number. On the other hand, the European Wheel has a more classic feel to it. It emphasizes on the beauty of the wheel. Familiarize yourself with the differences that exist with these two types of Roulette games and you will be able to play the game properly.

European Roulette offers better odds to the player as it only has a single zero, unlike the American Roulette variant which has both single and double zero. The odds change drastically due to the presence of a double zero. The house edge in European Roulette is 2.70%, while in the American Roulette version of the game; the house edge is 5.26% (nearly double that of the European wheel). So, it goes without saying, there really is no reason why you should ever play American Roulette, especially considering European Roulette games are so easy to find.

Online Roulette Games

Many players prefer playing Roulette at online casinos. This is because you are presented with more roulette gaming options at an online casino than what you will find at a land-based casino, as you may get to choose from American Roulette, European Roulette, French Roulette, Racetrack Roulette and Mini Roulette.

French Roulette is similar to the European version of the game, with the significant difference being this game offers the “La Partage” rule. It is a single zero roulette and the numbers on the table of the French Roulette are red. The La Partage rule applied in the French roulette game comes into play whenever you place outside (even money) bets and the ball lands on zero. You’ll get half of your bet back when this happens, and thus, it increases the player’s chances of beating the house. The French version also offers the “En Prison” rule, which is a variant of the “La Partage” rule. If the ball lands on zero, your bet will get imprisoned for the next spin, and if the bet is a winner, the bet is returned minus the winnings.

The Racetrack version is like the European Wheel as it also has a single zero only. The difference lies in the layout of the table, the placement of numbers and the odds of the game. It allows neighbor bets unlike many other roulette types. The Mini Roulette comprises only 13 numbers, so it takes as little as 15 bets to cover every bet with a single outcome.

Roulette at Land-Based Casinos

At a brick-and-mortar casino, you’re typically only going to find either American Roulette or European Roulette offered. Generally, regular casino chips are not used when playing roulette at offline casinos. Before the start of the game, the dealer will give you special colored chips, so your bets aren’t confused with other players at the table who are also playing. These chips will get changed back into regular chips when you’re ready to leave the table.
