The Labouchere is one of the most famous betting systems. Developed by mathematician Henry Labouchere, it involves creating a number sequence that hopefully leads to big profits.
The Labouchere is commonly used in both land-based and online casinos. However, there’s a very good reason why you should only use it at mobile casinos.
I’ll explain why throughout this post. But first, I’m going to discuss more on this system and which games it works best with.
How Does the Labouchere Work?
The first step to this system involves writing out a sequence of numbers. These numbers can either represent betting units or dollar bets.
You decide whether you want units or dollars to represent each number. Throughout this post, I’ll use both ways to express examples.
When losing a bet, you put the total loss at the end of the number string. Assuming you wager 11 units, then you’d add 11 units to the end after losing.
Here’s an example of setting up a sequence and putting it into action:
- You create the following number string: 2, 3, 4, 3, 2
- Your first wager will be worth 4 units (or $4)
- If you win this bet, the sequence becomes: 3, 4, 3
- Your next wager will be worth 6 units (or $6)
- If you lose this bet, the sequence becomes: 3, 4, 3, 6
- Your next wager will be worth 9 units (or $9)
The goal is to keep betting until completing the entire number string. Once you’ve completed it, you’ll have earned a desired amount of profits. From here, you can either set up another sequence or end the session.
No limit exists on how many numbers can be added to the string. However, you should only use numbers that add up to whatever profit you’re aiming for.
Which Games Does the Labouchere Work Well With?
As with any betting system, the Labouchere is risky. That said, you don’t want to use it on volatile games like slot machines.
Instead, you should only employ it on games with even-money bets, where you get paid 1:1 for wins. Popular games with even money-wagers include baccarat, blackjack, craps, and roulette.
Of these options, roulette is particularly popular when it comes to systems. Many gamblers use the Labouchere along with a red/black, odd/even, or high/low (1-18/19-36) bet.
Again, though, any game with even-money wagers will work. The point is to reduce the volatility because systems are already risky to begin with.
Why the Labouchere Works Better Online
You can use the Labouchere in any setting, whether it be a brick-and-mortar or online casino. However, the latter option definitely works the best.
Here are the reasons why you should use this system at mobile casinos:
- You can place bets as low as $1
- Lower wagers reduce the volatility
- You’ll rarely need to worry about hitting a table’s maximum betting limit
Low bets are key to why the Labouchere system works better online. They provide more flexibility with betting units and also don’t lead to as much risk.
Here’s a comparison between using this betting strategy in online and land-based casinos:
- The minimum wager is $1
- You create the following number sequence: 3, 4, 2, 4, 3 (represent dollars)
- Your first bet is $6
- You win this bet and the sequence becomes: 4, 2, 4
- Your next wager is $8
- The minimum wager is $5
- You use the same number sequence: 3, 4, 2, 4, 3, (represent units of $5)
- Your first is $30 ($5 x 6)
- You win this bet and the sequence becomes: 4, 2, 4
- Your next wager is $40 ($5 x 8)
You can see why the Labouchere is preferable for mobile casinos. Its small bets let you use it without needing hundreds or thousands of dollars.
It’ll also take longer to make any money when using $1 units. Earning $16 may feel like it takes a lifetime at this rate.
The benefits, however, outweigh the drawbacks. The low wagers that online casinos offer let you comfortably employ the Labouchere without risking your entire bankroll.
Other Tips for Using the Labouchere Betting System
You don’t want to rely on the Labouchere system alone. Here are other tips that you should follow when trying to win money through mobile roulette.
Stick to Your Bankroll
Even when you’re making small bets in online roulette, you still must be mindful of your bankroll. After all, this system can push you to place larger wagers at certain points.
The main key with bankroll management is to determine how much money you’re comfortable losing. You should look through your finances and figure out an acceptable risk.
From here, you can break your bankroll down into units and set a stop-loss limit. The latter determines how many units you’re willing to lose before quitting a session.
Here’s an example on setting up a roulette bankroll:
- You can afford to deposit $100
- You’ll use $1 as the betting unit
- You set a stop-loss limit of $20 per session
- Consequently, you won’t create a Labouchere number sequence adding up to more than $20
Play European or French Roulette
As mentioned before, roulette is one of the most-popular games regarding systems. Many online gamblers use the Labouchere with this game on a daily basis.
However, you shouldn’t choose just any online roulette game. Instead, you want to pick the variation with the highest return to player (RTP).
Here are four common roulette variations along with their house advantages:
- French roulette = 98.65% RTP
- European roulette = 97.30%
- Mini roulette = 96.15%
- American roulette = 94.74%
French roulette is the best game to play due to the la partage rule. This rule pays half back on your even-money bets when the ball lands on zero.
European roulette is your next best option if you can’t find the French version. It’s played on a wheel with 37 pockets, including a single zero. The zero is the only house-friendly number, thus leading to an acceptable 2.70% house edge.
Take Advantage of Roulette Bonuses
Some mobile casinos offer roulette bonuses. You definitely want to take advantage of these offers so that you can add extra winnings to your bankroll.
When visiting a new online casino, you should check the bonus terms and conditions. This step is important to finding out if roulette qualifies for bonuses at that gaming site.
Roulette will likely have a higher playthrough than slots. As long as it qualifies for bonuses, though, then you can still earn extra cash through your play.
Speaking of playthrough, it determines how much you’ll need to gamble before withdrawing a bonus. Lower playthrough is better because it helps you get your bonus funds faster.
Here’s an example on earning a roulette bonus:
- You qualify for a $100 bonus
- Playthrough is 60x
- 100 x 60 = $6,000
- You’ll need to wager $6k before withdrawing the funds
Aside from the terms discussed above, you’ll also need to meet other qualifications before cashing out. That said, you should always carefully look over the T&C’s before placing a deposit.
The Labouchere is quite risky with larger betting units. A $5 minimum wager really adds up when multiplied by 5, 6, 7, etc.
You can greatly reduce the risk involved with this system by playing online. After all, mobile casinos feature $1 minimum bets. These lower wagers allow you to use the Labouchere much more cheaply.
You’ll further boost your chances of success with this system by choosing the right game. French and European roulette offers the highest and second-highest RTP, respectively, of any variations.
Also, don’t forget to take advantage of online roulette bonuses. Such offers will increase your bottom line while using the Labouchere.
