Outcomes of USFL Week 2 Games

After an exciting opening week of games, Week 2 in the USFL lived up to the hype. Not all of the games were scoring, but they were still exciting. Three of the four games were within one score. Keep reading for a recap of all the action from last weekend.

Michigan Panthers – 6 at New Jersey Generals – 10

Week 2 kicked off with a matchup between the Panthers and the Generals. Both teams entered the week needing a win after losing on opening weekend. The game got off to a bit of a slow start and was scoreless for the first 10 minutes. Luckily, Generals’ Kicker Nick Rose nailed a 25-yard FG.

New Jersey did not hold onto the lead for long. Michigan was able to score early in the second quarter to go 6-3. Unfortunately, a missed PAT kept it a 3-point game. The Generals were able to regain the lead on a 1-yard rushing TD by RB Darius Victor.

The Panthers entered halftime down 6-10. In the second half, both defenses held the other team out of the endzone. A hard-fought defensive battle led to the lowest scoring game of the weekend. New Jersey dominated the time of possession and outgained Michigan by 75 total yards.

Pittsburgh Maulers – 23 at Philadelphia Stars – 30

Next up was a battle of two teams from the Keystone State. The Maulers and Stars slugged it out for 60 minutes as each team looked to avoid falling to 0-2. In the end, Philly was able to outlast Pittsburgh and put up 9 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to walk away with the win.

Despite what the final score may suggest, Pittsburgh’s defense did what it could to keep the team in this game. The Maulers forced two turnovers in the first quarter. Unfortunately, the offense could only muster a field goal off those early turnovers.

Two football Teams Running a Play

Philly fired back in the second quarter and mounted a 14-3 lead over the visiting team. The Stars looked to score again, but the Maulers forced another turnover. This time, the fumble was returned for a TD. Each team scored another TD before halftime, however, Pittsburgh’s kicker missed a PAT.

The Maulers enter the third quarter down 16-21. It was not until the end of the third quarter that a team scored again Pittsburgh pulled ahead 23-21 on a 37-yard passing TD. However, Philadelphia answered in the fourth quarter with a TD and the first ever 3-point conversion. The Stars earned a hard fought 30-23 victory.

Birmingham Stallions – 33 at Houston Gamblers – 28

Last Saturday’s action continued with a high scoring matchup between Birmingham and Houston. Both teams entered the game with perfect 1-0 records. The Stallions and the Gamblers scored earlier and often in this one. Ultimately, a late INT held off Houston’s comeback attempt and Birmingham got the W.

The Stallions started the scoring early with a 48-yard pick six that came less than a minute into the game. Houston was able to answer with a FG and then a pick six of its own to take a 9-7 lead. Birmingham’s 32-yard FG gave them a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Houston was able to keep the ball rolling in the second half. The Stallions on the other hand could only muster up a FG. The Gamblers entered halftime up 18-13. Houston’s lead could have been larger, but they missed a 2-point conversion attempt.

Birmingham mounted a furious comeback in the second half and put 13 points in the third quarter. That was more than the Gamblers had in the entire second half. In the end, this battle of Southern Division teams went to Birmingham, 33-28.

New Orleans Breakers – 34 at Tampa Bay Bandits – 3

Sunday’s stand-alone game was a matchup of title favorites. Unfortunately, the Bandits did not get the memo. This 31-point blowout is the worst in the short history of the USFL. It will be interesting to see how they adjust when the teams face off again in Week 9.

The Breakers pour it on early and did not stop. They scored 14 points in the first quarter and added another TD before halftime. Tampa Bay’s only sign of life was a FG with 5:54 left in the half. The Bandits finished the half down 21-3.

Two Players for the USFL New Orleans Breakers Team

Tampa Bay’s luck did not turn around in the second half. The Breakers’ defense kept the Bandits out of the endzone. Sloppy play by Tampa ended any hopes of a comeback. Ultimately, New Orleans came out on top 34-3.

USFL Week 3 Betting Odds

We can now turn our attention to the action scheduled for Week 3. Once again, every team is facing off with an opponent that has an identical record.

Birmingham and New Orleans will break their tie for the best record in the USFL. Meanwhile, the Maulers and the Panthers will look to avoid an 0-3 start.

Tampa Bay Bandits (1-1) vs Houston Gamblers (1-1)

Week 3 starts with a matchup in the Southern Division. The Bandits (-1) will be slight favorites over the Gamblers (+1). Both teams are looking to bounce back from losses last week. Bovada has Tampa Bay’s moneyline set at -120. Meanwhile, Houston is listed as even money to get the victory at home. The over/under is set at 39 points.

The Bandits were embarrassed last week and could come out firing. However, the Gamblers’ offense has been the more consistent of the two.

I like Houston as the slight underdog here to get the win and move to 2-1. With what we have seen from Tampa Bay so far, I would take the under here.

Birmingham Stallions (2-0) vs New Orleans Breakers (2-0)

Saturday’s action continues with a primetime matchup of undefeated teams. New Orleans (-3.5) are the biggest favorites of the weekend according to Bovada’s sportsbook. Birmingham (+3.5) has been playing surprisingly well this season a could feed off the Alabama crowd again in this one. Bovada has the Breakers’ money line at -170, with the Stallions listed at +145. The over/under is set at 44.5 points.

New Orleans put on a show against the Bandits last weekend, and they could do so again on Saturday. Both teams have momentum, I think the Breakers come out on top. However, I would not be surprised if the Stallions cover the 3.5-point spread. This game has the highest over/under of the weekend and I think the over hits.

Pittsburgh Maulers (0-2) vs Michigan Panthers (0-2)

From the best records in the league to the worst. Either the Maulers (+2.5) or the Panthers (-2.5) will leave the game with their first win this season.

Michigan (-145) is the slight favorite according to Bovada. However, Pittsburgh (+125) has the defense to for the Panthers into mistakes. Bovada has the over/under set at 38.5 points.

After a bad showing in Week 1, the Maulers’ offense came alive last week. If they can do it again, I think the Maulers’ defense can do enough to get the win. However, I do not see this as a high scoring game and would bet the under here.

New Jersey Generals (1-1) vs Philadelphia Stars (1-1)

The final game of Week 3 is a Northern Division matchup between New Jersey and Philadelphia. Bovada has the Stars (-1) as a slight home favorite. On the moneyline, Philly is listed at -120 and New Jersey is even money to win. Bovada has the over/under listed at 40.5 points for the Week 3 finale.

New Jersey struggled in the second half of games this season. Philly on the other hand has moved the ball well in two games so far this season. With that in mind, I think the Stars win and cover the spread. I also think the teams cover the over of 40.5 points.

In Summary

The 2022 USFL season rolls on this weekend with another set of great games on the schedule. This week, the top two teams in the league will battle it out. Also, the two worst teams will attempt to keep themselves from an 0-3 start. Check back next week for another USFL update and betting odds for Week 4.
