History of Belterra Park Cincinnati
Like many racinos, Belterra Park opened as Coney Island Racetrack in 1925, right on the shores of the Ohio River. Perhaps the most notable occurrences in the racetrack’s early years came with the two appearances from the horseracing history legend Seabiscuit in 1936, where he finished third in both races.
The Cincinnati Flood of 1937 severely damaged the racetrack. However, the track was salvaged and reopened under the name River Downs. Almost two decades later, in 1956, the track became one of just 13 tracks at the time to boast a grass racing strip.
River Downs Jockey Club Inc. purchased the track in 1975 and, by the mid-1980s, sought a renovation project for the grandstand following the 1988 horse racing season.
In 1996, Ohio legislators allowed Full Card simulcasting in the state, which led to River Downs Race Book to become the most modern simulcasting center in America.
Despite River Downs’ newfound success, the track again fell victim to its adjacent location to the Ohio River during the Cincinnati Flood of 1997. The city’s worst flood in five decades. The flood affected the lower level of the Clubhouse and the grandstand.
Pinnacle Entertainment acquired the track in January 2011 before Boyd Gaming purchased the track in 2018, along with three other casinos. At the time of this writing, Boyd Gaming continues to own and operate the track and the casino.
