1 – Sedgwick County Zoo

Of course, we’re starting with perhaps the most family-friendly attraction in the area. The zoo features species of animals both native to the region and your most popular exotic wildlife.

From the North American Bison to the pride of lions, water buffalo, and more, you’re in for quite a diverse crowd.

They listed the suggested duration at two to three hours on TripAdvisor, so it’s a good place to venture when you want to take at least an afternoon off from the casino floor.

Having received a 4.5-star rating and over 1,300 reviews on TripAdvisor as of April 2021, the zoo is one of the most popular attractions in Wichita.

2 – Botanica: The Wichita Gardens

You’ll discover perhaps the most peaceful attraction in the area at Sim Park. It offers multiple themed gardens, such as the Butterfly Garden, Rose and Wildflower Garden, Shakespeare Garden, and the popular Sally-Sensory Garden.

During specific times of the year, they even offer special programs for children, so it’s yet another fantastic location for the family. This is especially true if one of the younger members of your travel group loves nature.

Scenic View of The International Peace Garden

It’s also one of those places that you can enjoy regardless of the season. Come in for a color blend of bulbous flowers in the spring. In December, you’ll find the Wichita Gardens decorated for the holiday season.

3 – The Keeper of the Plains

The Keeper of the Plains stands at the intersection of the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers, and has remained a staple in the region since 1974. For nearly 50 years, the Keeper has attracted visitors from all across America, with its hands raised in supplication to the Great Spirit.

As with the gardens, it’s an impeccable place to immerse yourself in the region’s scenery. You’ll gain access to the Keeper via the bow-and-arrow cable bridges across the two rivers.

A sight to see by day, the fire drums keep the Keeper perpetually lit, and it’s an even more epic view when the sun goes down.

Open year-round, you’ll also find an eclectic set of medicinal herbs, sage, battlebrush, yuccas, prairie grasses, and cactus. The sights, smells, and atmosphere make the sight a must-visit when you’re looking to venture off Kansas Star Casino’s floor.

4 – Old Cowtown Museum

While you won’t find as many historical sites here as you would in Dodge City, Old Cowtown Museum serves as an outlier. This 23-acre open-air history museum has dedicated itself to the Old West setting that Wichita and Sedgwick County was from 1865 to 1880.

If you’re into the Old West, it’s more than worth venturing to Old Cowtown Museum. Better yet, the staff dresses as if they’re from the time period, granting this unique attraction even more authenticity.

They will demonstrate how chores like gardening occurred during the time, adding to the educational experience.

Unlike most of America’s museums, Old Cowtown Museum also boasts accreditation to rare company, as a member of the American Alliance of Museums. Of the 34,000-plus museums in America, only 3%, or 1,020, boast such credentials. It’s perhaps the most legit of all the attractions listed.

5 – Exploration Place

We’ve ventured from the historical setting in Section 4, where they will transport you from the 21st century to the 19th century.

Now, it’s time to visit Exploration Place, where they will do the opposite. Here, you’ll find the region’s most famous science museum, and odds are they’ll take you to the 22nd century.

For the science enthusiast in you or your travel group, you’ll find hundreds of interactive exhibits that will challenge and train your mind. Each reside within the main building. But once you’ve had your fill, head outside where you will discover a park flourishing with regional wildlife in a wetlands setting.

Plus, your kids can head over to the sandbox and dig for rare archaeological artifacts. As with the other museums and zoos on today’s list, expect to spend over two hours here, so plan accordingly. And if you’re into the subject, odds are you’ll spend an entire day exploring the indoor exhibits and outdoor activities.

6 – Museum of World Treasures

Are you sensing a theme here? Yes, you’ll discover a plethora of museums in Wichita, and the Museum of World Treasures is yet another fine location within the area. Here, you will discover some of the rarest treasures from around the world and they’re appropriate for visitors of all ages and interest levels.

Museum of World Treasures

Much of what you’ll find belonged to ancient civilizations. But the museum has also expanded its collection to include recreations of artifacts from the Conquistadors to those as recent as gems found on battlefields during the World Wars.

They boast a collection of 3,000 artifacts and judging from the photos on TripAdvisor, some of the strangest exhibits out there. I won’t elaborate too much here, but seeing is believing.

7 – Frank Lloyd Wright’s Allen House

A smaller museum, as opposed to the last three attractions listed above, the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Allen House comprises a smaller tour, but perhaps the most vibrant in the region.

They receive a sparse crowd, so viewers on TripAdvisor start off by commending the private tours and attention they’ve received.

Plus, the tour guides are among the region’s most knowledgeable, and reviewers can’t express the impeccable service and education given to them as they ventured through this historical building.

If you’re an architecture enthusiast, it’s also worth venturing to. Its unique layout will leave you craving to embark on a photo shoot at every corner. And if you’re into history, the house’s decor and furniture remains frozen in time, allowing you to step back over 100 years into the past.

8 – Wichita Art Museum

Let’s continue the museum tour at the Wichita Art Museum. Their mission is to “bring people, ideas, and American art together,” and like most large city art museums, they succeed in such an endeavor.

A museum large enough for a variety of choices, but not so large that you will get to everything, as one reviewer on TripAdvisor implied.

Inside View Of Several Exhibits At Plains Art Museum

The staff is highly knowledgeable about the works of art on display here, and you’ll find works of art ranging from sculpting, to ice sculpting, paintings, photography, and more.

Those from out of town, along with locals, have made multiple return trips. And if you’re touring the area, make sure you stop at the nearby gift shop to commemorate your time in the region and at one of the area’s hottest museums.

9 – Old Town

We’ve talked about plenty of museums, so let’s make a quick stop at Old Town. Here, you can find a mixture of modern and classic, including art galleries and theatres, along with breweries, eateries, retail and entertainment outlets.

Along with its classical setting, you’ll also treat your eyes to a breathtaking view of the Wichita, Kansas, skyline.

It’s a fine area to hang out when you’re looking to get away from the casino games for an evening, and it’s a great way to live up the local flair, given the ownership at plenty of these shops and other outlets.

Featuring over 100 businesses, you may make a few return trips to Old Town before your time is up in the area. It’s not one of those places where you can enjoy everything in a single evening or even a single afternoon. So, carve out more than enough time if you’re looking to experience everything offered.
