7 Reasons Jacks or Better Video Poker Is Better Than Texas Holdem Poker

I’ve been playing Jacks or Better video poker and Texas Holdem for decades and enjoy both games. But when a new gambler asks me which game is better, I always recommend Jacks or Better.

The truth I that in the long run, you might have a better chance to win when you play Texas Holdem, but most gamblers never learn how to win. In fact, just about everything about Jacks or Better video poker is better than Texas Holdem. Here are the top seven reasons why Jacks or Better video poker is better than Texas Holdem.

1 – Easier Strategy

More gamblers make a profit playing Texas Holdem than playing Jacks or Better video poker. So why would I recommend playing Jacks or Better instead of Texas Holdem?

The few players who make money playing Texas Holdem have mastered the strategy skills they need to win. But it takes years of effort to reach this level as a Texas Holdem player, and most gamblers never reach this level, no matter how hard or long they work.

But you can start using the perfect Jacks or Better strategy immediately. In fact, you can use perfect strategy the very next time you play Jacks or Better. And you never have to worry about making a mistake.

The only thing you need to use the perfect strategy on every Jacks or Better hand is a strategy card. I bought one years ago on Amazon, but you can find them in many casino gift shops, and you can even find free charts listed online that you can print.

When you get a card, all you do is consult the chart on each hand and make the play that’s listed highest on the card. Then, as you use your card, you quickly learn which plays are better than others, and before you know it, you no longer need to use the card.

If you want to learn Texas Holdem strategy, you have to read a lot of books, practice for years, and adjust your play based on your opponents. While you might be able to do this eventually, you’re going to lose a lot of time and money trying to reach that point.

2 – Easier to Predict Your Results

When I play Texas Holdem for four hours, I have no idea what my results are going to be. Sometimes I win a lot of money in four hours, sometimes I come close to breaking even, and sometimes I lose in a four-hour playing session. Even the best poker players have a hard time predicting exactly what their results are going to be over a short period of time.

But when I play video poker, I can predict my results more accurately. For example, I know I play about 400 hands every hour, so if I play for four hours, I play about 1,600 hands. I also know the house edge is about .5%, and using this information and how much I bet on each hand, I can accurately predict how much I’m going to lose.

If I’m playing on a nickel machine, betting .25 per hand, I risk $400 over the course of four hours. My expected loss is $2 on the $400 risk.

You might think that predicting how much I’m going to lose is worthless, but what if I’m playing with a bonus? Knowing my expected losses lets me know how valuable a bonus is and if I can make money using the bonus.

3 – You Can Play By Yourself

When you want to play Texas Holdem, you have to find at least one other person who wants to play. And it’s better if you can find five to eight more people who want to play. Unfortunately, while there are plenty of poker rooms that offer games around the world, you might not be close to a poker room when you want to play.

But when you want to play Jacks or Better video poker, you don’t have to have anyone else to play. You can play in a casino close to you or play in a mobile or online casino.

While not everyone prefers to gamble alone, if you don’t like being around other people, Jacks or Better is a much better option than Texas Holdem.

I don’t usually mind being around other gamblers, but I play Jacks or Better video poker when I want to spend some time alone.

4 – Easy to Find 9/6 Machines in Online Casinos

The best Jacks or Better video poker machines are 9/6 machines. 9/6 machines used to be easy to find in local casinos. Still, most local casinos have been reducing the number of video poker machines they offer and exchanging 9/6 machines for machines with worse pay tables.

But it’s still easy to find 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker machines in mobile and online casinos. Of course, not every mobile and online casino offers 9/6 Jacks or Better, but enough of them do that you still have plenty of options.

And when you find an online or mobile casino you like that does off 9/6 Jacks or Better, you can play there for as long as you want. You don’t have to look for a new casino unless you want to look for a new casino.

The truth is that it’s also fairly easy to find poker games online, though where you live does have a lot to do with finding games. But you can’t always find the games you want with the players you want online. But you can always find a decent Jacks or Better machine online or in a mobile casino.

5 – Low Bet limits, Especially Online

I used a nickel Jacks or Better video poker machine in an earlier example. Unfortunately, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a nickel video poker machine in a land-based casino, but I can still find them in online casinos. And as you saw from the example, when you’re only betting a quarter per hand, you can limit your losses.

You can also play low-limit Texas Holdem online, but you still are putting more money at risk than when you play low-limit Jacks or Better.

And if you’re gambling in a land-based casino, you have to have at least $100 to play in most poker rooms, with some games requiring $500 or more. But you can still find quarter Jacks or Better machines, where the total bet per hand is only $1.25.

While this post isn’t really about Jacks or Better strategy, it’s important to bet five coins on every hand you play. If you don’t bet five coins, you miss out on a big bonus when you get a royal flush, and when you miss out on the bonus, it makes the house edge higher.

6 – Simple Card Odds

When you play Jacks or Better, you can use simple card odds on every hand. For example, if you have a queen and draw four cards, you know there are three other queens and 47 total cards you can receive.

You can use simple card odds when you play Texas Holdem, but you have to use a lot more than simple card odds if you want to win. You have to learn how to use pot odds, expected value, and many other advanced mathematical concepts.

When you play Jacks or Better video poker, all you have to do is use a simple strategy card, and you can forget about using complicated math.

7 – It’s Easy to Play for Free

I like playing Jacks or Better video poker for real money because I love it when I get a royal flush. But I also enjoy playing the game for fun, so sometimes I play for free.

Playing Jacks or Better for free is also a good way to practice using your strategy card. And playing for free is easy.

I play for free at one of the online casinos where I play Jacks or Better for real money, but you can even find free Jacks or Better games in many places online that don’t offer real money gambling. So either sign up for an account at an online or mobile casino or do a quick search to find a free Jacks or Better game.
