7 Reasons Blackjack is the Most Overrated Casino Game

Thinking Man With Dealt Blackjack Table on Right

If you asked 10 random gamblers what their favorite casino game is, you would probably get a few different answers. Some players might argue that poker is the superior table game.

Others might claim that the excitement surrounding roulette or craps tables make them the best in the house. Then there are those gamblers who say that there really isn’t a contest when it comes to the greatest game.

That’s because blackjack is universally regarded as the most popular and famous casino game. It’s impossible to ignore several compelling reasons that make blackjack a fan favorite.

The game is entertaining and gives certain players the best chance to make money. However, does it deserve the crown as the ultimate table game that casinos have to offer?

Here are 7 reasons blackjack might just be the most overrated casino game.

1 ‒ It’s Awful for Beginners

When I first started gambling, I made a point to get as much advice as possible to make the learning process as easy as possible. Most of the advice I received dealt with discipline and managing money responsibly.

Others recommended I avoid gambling under the influence and only play when I was in a good state of mind. While all of this information was helpful, I couldn’t help but think it was slightly boring.

You see, most novice gamblers don’t want to think of gambling as an activity to be done responsibly. Instead, they want to believe they can turn a profit quickly and win some serious money.

I, being a naive young gambler, felt the same way. So I started asking about which games gave me the best chance to make money fast.

Most people I asked suggested that I give blackjack a try. Seeing as I had some experience playing the game, and had seen the game portrayed on the big screen plenty of times, I felt prepared.

Unfortunately, I am not a blackjack savant and I soon learned that Hollywood makes the game look much simpler than it is.

Blackjack is a great game for intermediate and advanced players but isn’t a great option for beginners. It’s quite complicated compared to other games and can decimate unprepared gamblers’ bankrolls.

2 ‒ There Are Plenty of Terrible Players

Plenty of kinds of gamblers are drawn to blackjack tables.

Whereas a majority of beginners are more than likely going to play games like slots and video poker, I’d argue that blackjack draws in a ton of new players.

Once again, that’s mostly due to the game’s popularity and reputation as being a great way to make money.

While there shouldn’t be any restrictions placed on new gamblers, that leads to blackjack tables being full of awful gamblers.

To be a competent blackjack player, you need to make sure a few things are certain.

Most new players are lacking in at least one of these departments. Unlike other games, there isn’t a lot of room for error.

If players aren’t qualified to play blackjack, they won’t stand a chance of winning money. Plus, it can be challenging to play at a table that’s full of awful blackjack players.

The game will move slowly, other players will get flustered, and the atmosphere will most likely be negatively impacted. Most of these players are priced out of tables with higher minimums.

But, if you’re a decent blackjack player who wants to play blackjack for cheap, you’re likely going to encounter plenty of these newer players.

3 ‒ You Have to Grind to Make Any Money

It’s an undeniable fact that blackjack has the best odds in the house. But, that doesn’t mean it gives every single gambler the best opportunity to win money.

You see, a first-time gambler is probably going to have a better chance of making money at a slot machine than at the blackjack table. Games like slots are easier to play and beginners don’t have to struggle to learn the rules of basic strategy.

Not only is it easier to play slots, but there’s also always an outside chance that you can win a large sum of money in a matter of seconds.

Conversely, it usually takes players a lot longer to make money at a blackjack table.

When you play a hand of blackjack, you have slightly less than a 50% chance to win every hand. The best in the business (usually those capable of counting cards) will have to grind at the table for multiple hours.

If you have the time, energy, and skill to do so, it’s possible to make some money playing blackjack. But, if you lack the means to do so, you might be better off playing games that allow you to luck into huge wins.

4 ‒ Old School Blackjack Players are Grumps

It can be a real pain to get stuck playing with unskilled players. But that’s nothing compared to playing with cantankerous old-school blackjack players.

While these types of players aren’t as common as novices, they are far more obnoxious to play with.

These gamblers are very vocal and quick to judge players who aren’t as skilled as they are. If you make a mistake, they are the first ones to let you know.

I have no issue with blackjack players who offer helpful advice to newer players who lack experience. However, most of the time, the advice they offer doesn’t have the other player’s best interest in mind.

5 ‒ There’s Only 1 Correct Way to Play Hands

There are several ways to play other types of casino games. Unique strategies and tactics make playing games like poker and craps so unpredictable and exciting.

Any two players might have completely different tactical approaches to playing casino games. However, blackjack doesn’t reward players who want to think outside of the box.

If you want to thrive at a blackjack table, you must stick to a universally accepted basic strategy. This is also known as playing by the book.

Players who fail to do so run the risk of losing hands more often and decreasing their chances of holding their own at the tables. This can make for somewhat of a redundant playing experience.

While every hand is somewhat different, there isn’t much variance in how players are supposed to approach each hand.

6 ‒ Blackjack Isn’t All That Competitive

Part of the fun of playing casino games is their competitive nature.

However, blackjack doesn’t involve gamblers facing off against one another. Players instead play the house which is represented by the dealer.

To make matters less interesting, the dealer doesn’t actually stand to gain anything from beating you. In fact, most dealers would prefer to see gamblers win hands.

That’s because blackjack players who win money are more likely to tip and be in a better mood.

Having said all of that, sometimes blackjack doesn’t feel like a very competitive game. Players might feel like teaming up with their table-mates, but at the end of the day, it’s player vs. the dealer.

7 ‒ It’s Still A Great Casino Game

Despite several drawbacks to playing blackjack, it’s still an excellent casino game.

While it might be somewhat overrated, there are plenty of reasons anyone who considers themselves a serious gambler could gain something from playing.

Learning to play blackjack will make you a better gambler and might increase your odds of making money.

It might not be the most competitive of games, but it’s still unpredictable and exciting. Winning money feels like a major accomplishment because you simply can’t luck into it.

Blackjack might just be the most overrated casino game.

Despite its popularity amongst the gambling masses, there are several aspects of the game that deserve a double-take.

Contrary to popular opinion, blackjack is terrible for new gamblers. It’s more complex than other games and requires players to know about the rules and strategy.

While it’s very possible to learn how to play in one sitting, it could end up costing you a small fortune.

Still, the idea that blackjack is great for beginners persists which means you’re more than likely going to play next to some terrible players.

Sitting at a table with people who have no idea how to play the game can be mildly infuriating. But, that’s nothing compared to playing with old-school grumps who criticized inexperienced players.

There’s little to no variance in how players should play the game. If you don’t play by the book and with perfect strategy, you have less of a chance to make money.

Despite all of this, blackjack is still a wonderful casino game. It’s somewhat overrated, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t test your luck the next time you go to a casino.
