7 Moves that Will Cost Gamblers Money in the Long Run

Casinos, and the entire gambling industry for that matter, are all about making money.

Having said that, it’s startling to see so many people go about winning money in all the wrong ways. Most gamblers won’t win money at the casinos, and most of the time that’s entirely their fault.

Meanwhile, casinos stay in business thanks in large part to the fact that the average gambler is downright awful at the most popular casino games.

When I first started gambling, I found it very hard to win money on a semi-regular basis. Even when I would walk away from a casino wealthier than when I arrived, I couldn’t help but think of all the money I’ve lost in the past.

Finally, after losing money once again, I looked at myself in the mirror and realized something.

I was putting myself in a terrible position to try to succeed at a casino. Once I recognized it, I was able to alter my approach to gambling which immediately paid dividends.

Still, every time I go to the casino I find myself making an occasional move that costs me money. To help you eliminate these problems from your gambling arsenal, here are seven moves that will cost gamblers money in the long run.

1 ‒ Refusing to Take Advice or Accept Help

Gambling can often involve a tremendous amount of pride because of the presence of money. When you win money, it can go a long way to increase the amount of pride you feel.

At the same time, losing money can be humiliating. As you might find, improving your gambling skills can result in more wins and an increased feeling of self-worth. However, there comes a time when gamblers can start blurring the line between confidence and cockiness.

When this happens, gamblers can start making mistakes they normally wouldn’t make. The truth is that there’s no such thing as the perfect gambler, and no one should feel like they’re too good to listen to advice.

While I’m not saying that every piece of advice should be followed, it’s worth hearing other gamblers out. Once you start excelling as a gambler, you’ll likely find that these pieces of advice will be offered less and less.

Until then, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Some of these words of wisdom might help you limit the number of mistakes you make or change the way you approach gambling in general.

I see far too many gamblers who are too proud to alter their gambling style, which results in them losing money unnecessarily.

2 ‒ Being Too Inconsistent at the Blackjack Table

There are certain games where it pays to be somewhat erratic and unpredictable. However, there are other games where it pays to play by the book and be consistent.

One of the best examples of this is blackjack. I’ve long said that blackjack is one of the best games for newer, inexperienced gamblers.

That’s because once you learn basic blackjack strategy, it’s possible to play the game perfectly by the book. In other words, if you stick to playing by the “book,” you give yourself the best possible chance of winning money.

With all that being said, you might think that winning money at the blackjack table is a foregone conclusion. This can’t be farther from the truth.

You see, blackjack is still unpredictable and has a slight house edge. Additionally, plenty of players approach the game inconsistently and refuse to play by the book.

Blackjack offers some of the best odds in the house. Learning to hold your own at the tables isn’t that difficult and being consistent will immediately improve your chances of winning money. It’s not worth trying to implement your strategy.

3 ‒ Limiting Yourself to Playing Slots

Real money slots are the most popular type of casino game as they make the house more money than any other type of game. On top of that, slots are easy to play and incredibly affordable for all types of gamblers. Plus, you don’t often have to wait for a seat to open up at a slot machine

While the game is incredibly popular, there are a few reasons why players should not limit themselves to playing slots.

  • Slot machines aren’t as stimulating as other types of games.
  • There’s not really a communal aspect to playing slots.
  • Slots offer some of the worst odds in the house.
  • You shouldn’t settle for a game just because it’s easy to learn.

If you go to casinos to make money, exclusively playing slots is somewhat counterintuitive.

Sure, there’s an outside chance that you might strike it rich and hit a jackpot. But it’s far more likely that you’ll spend valuable time pressing a button over and over again.

This mindless type of gambling might appeal to some, and there’s no reason to shame slot players. But don’t be surprised if you end up losing money in the long run.

4 ‒ Being Too Consistent at the Poker Table

While certain games like blackjack reward consistency, other games favor a more unpredictable style of gambling.

Poker is one of the best and most entertaining casino games for a variety of reasons. There are plenty of different types of poker, each with its pros and cons.

But many of the most popular styles are somewhat similar and worth learning to play. Many of these varieties of poker are quite different from other card games in casinos.

Many table games involve gamblers competing against the house while poker doesn’t. Much of poker’s appeal comes from the human vs. human element of the game.

Because you’re competing against other gamblers, you need to have the ability to keep your opponents guessing. Despite that fact, many poker players refuse to deviate from the norm and choose to play with the same type of strategy every hand.

By doing this, you’ll expose yourself to other players and allow them to figure out your tells and eventually best you. I’m not advocating for playing like a maniac, but one of the worst things you can do at a poker table is too predictable.

5 ‒ Not Making an Effort to Learn Other Games

There’s no excuse for being bored at the casino. Gambling in a casino is an exciting experience for many reasons, especially due to the variety of games they offer. However, there’s still a chance gamblers will find themselves bored with a certain type of game.

The easiest solution to this problem is switching games. However, there are gamblers who refuse to do so because of the difficulties that come with learning new games.

Figuring out how to play games at the casino can be daunting, especially if you’re new to gambling. Not only that, but it can be somewhat expensive if you’re not careful.

However, life is far too short to find yourself bored inside a casino. Step outside of your comfort zone and make an effort to learn about the other, more exciting types of casino games.

Not only will you have more fun, but you might find the game that gives you the best chance of winning money.

6 ‒ Thumbing Your Nose at Bankroll Management

Acting like a responsible, disciplined gambler will benefit you greatly.

Unfortunately, many inexperienced gamblers fail to learn proper bankroll management strategies and tactics before they start gambling. Learning to manage your gambling budget is much easier than you think.

  • Before you gamble, acknowledge that gambling is a hobby (unless you’re a pro).
  • Figure out your gambling budget and stick to it.
  • Don’t give yourself the chance to lose too much money.
  • Leave your credit cards at home if you don’t trust yourself to stick to a budget.

7 ‒ Only Playing Casino Games Inside Casinos

Becoming a solid gambler won’t happen overnight and certainly won’t occur unless you put the work in.

To some people, that might sound like I’m advising you to go to the casino as much as possible. However, that’s not the case.

When you’re learning to gamble, it’s important to play as much as possible. That is if you hope to get to a point where you’re winning money every time you go to the casino.

Playing online casino games when you’re at home or have some free time can benefit you greatly. You will be able to learn different things about the game and even discover different tactics and pieces of strategy.

These little tidbits that you pick up outside of the casino can stick with you and make you a better gambler.

Our Thoughts on These Behaviors

There are several moves gamblers make that routinely cost them money.

It might be somewhat humbling to accept help from better gamblers. But being too proud to do so will hurt you and can decrease your chances of winning money.

Certain games, like blackjack, reward consistent players, while other games (poker) might not. It’s important to note the differences in playing styles and strategies before you start gambling.

Refusing to learn how to play a variety of casino games can end up costing you money. Casino games differ in the odds they offer gamblers, so you don’t want to get stuck playing a game that gives you no chance to win.
