History of the Academy Awards

The Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, started in 1929 and have undergone many changes over the years. The ceremony at the first Academy Awards lasted roughly 15 minutes and only 15 awards were handed out. This year, there are 23 categories, and the event is scheduled to last three hours.

To take home the famous Oscar statuette, film stars need to impress the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The Academy consists of over 9,000 film-industry professionals. The voting pool has become more diverse in recent years, adding hundreds of new female and minority members.

This year the Oscars will make history by being the first iteration since 2011 to have multiple hosts. Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer are all scheduled to share hostess duties for the 94th Academy Awards.

The eligibility criteria will also be different this year. The 93rd Academy Awards extended their eligibility period due to the pandemic, resulting in a shorter period this year. Only films released between March 1st and December 31, 2021, will be considered.

How to Pick the Best Oscars Betting Site

Before you can begin placing your wagers on the 2022 Oscars, you first have to pick a betting site. Even if you already have a preferred online sportsbook, it is important to shop around to get the best betting odds. Competitive betting lines are just one of many things to look for when comparing Oscar betting sites.

One of the biggest considerations when comparing betting sites is the coverage of the actual event. In this case, finding a betting site with Oscars coverage is a must. If you are having trouble finding Oscars’ betting odds, check the “entertainment” section of the sportsbook.

In addition to finding a site with adequate coverage of the Academy Awards, there are many other factors to consider. With all online betting, it is crucial that you find a site that is safe and secure. Online sportsbooks with a variety of easy-to-use banking options are also a plus. Before settling on a sports betting site, make sure it has highly rated customer service.

Tips for Betting on the Oscars

Once you have your Academy Awards betting site picked out, the next step is to place your wagers. Each awards show is different, so you need to have a strategy for each one you wager on. For those new to betting on awards shows, here are some Oscar’s betting tips.

First and foremost, the timing of your wager will determine the odds you get. The Oscars are this weekend, so it is unlikely that the betting odds will change too dramatically. However, the odds can shift a lot in the time between the nominees being announced and the actual show. If you plan on betting on the Oscars next year, be sure to place your bets as early as you can.

Another Oscars betting tip is to look at the results of previous award shows. The Oscars are far from the first event in any film award season. If a movie or actor has been performing well at other award shows, they are a good Oscars bet. For instance, the film that wins the Golden Globe for best picture also wins the Oscar 60% of the time.

A final piece of Academy Awards betting advice is to look at what film critics have written about the nominees. Well-known film critics can have a huge amount of sway over the Academy Award voters. Picking the critics’ favorite is another solid Oscars betting strategy.

2022 Oscars Betting Odds

This year, there are 23 categories at the Academy Awards. It would take too long to go over them all. Instead, we are going to take a closer look at five of the more prestigious categories. All of these Oscar betting odds are provided by one of our highly rated online sportsbooks, BetUS.

Best Actor

One of the biggest categories at the annual Oscars award is Best Actor. This year, BetUS has Will Smith (-900) as the favorite to win the award for his role in King Richard. Smith has already won a BAFTA, Golden Globe, SAG, and Critics’ Choice Award for the role. He has been nominated for two Best Actor Oscars in the past, but he has never won.

Smith is a huge favorite to win his first Academy Award for Best Actor. However, he is not the only nominee up for the award. Benedict Cumberbatch (+500) and Andrew Garfield (+1000) could offer value as underdog picks. Denzel Washington (+2000) and Javier Bardem (+4000) are also nominated for the award.

Best Supporting Actor

According to BetUS, the betting favorite to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor is Troy Kotsur (-450). Kotsur played the character of Frank Rossi in CODA. So far, the role has earned Kotsur many awards, including SAG and Critics’ Choice awards. However, Kotsur did not win in this category at the Golden Globes.

Kotsur lost out at the Golden Globes to Kodi Smit-McPhee who appeared in The Power of the Dog. Smit-McPhee (+230) has the second-best odds to win at the Oscars and is a viable value bet.  The Power of the Dog is the favorite to win Best Picture, so Smit-McPhee is a serious contender here. Kodi Ciaran Hinds (+1400), Jesse Plemons (+3000), and Jonathan Kimble Simmons (+3500) are also nominated.

Best Actress

Moving to the female nominees, the favorite in the Best Actress category is Jessica Chastain (-210). Chastain is nominated for her role as Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. She has multiple Academy Award nominations but has never won in the past. Chastain won the Best Actress Award at this year’s Critic’s Choice Awards.

Nicole Kidman (+300) also deserves consideration as a pick here. Her role in Being the Ricardos earned her a win at the Golden Globes this year. Olivia Colman (+400) is also not far behind the top two contenders. Kristen Stewart (+600) and Penelope Cruz (+1500) are also on the ballot.

Best Supporting Actress

One of the biggest favorites of the night according to BetUS is in the Best Supporting Actress category. Ariana DeBose (-2000) is a massive favorite for the award. DeBose was nominated for her portrayal of Anita in West Side Story. She has already won BAFTA, SAG, and Golden Globe awards for the role.

The closest nominee to DeBose in the betting odds is Kirsten Dunst (+700). Dunst was nominated for the award for her role as Rose Gordon in The Power of the Dog. This is her first Academy Award nomination. Aunjanue Ellis (+1600), Jessie Buckley (+1800), and Judi Dench (+2200) are also nominated for the award.

Best Picture

This year, there are a total of 10 nominees for the Best Picture Academy Award. According to the betting odds from BetUS, it is really a two-film race. The Power of the Dog (-175) and CODA (+125) are the only nominees with better than 10-1 odds. Despite only being a slight favorite, The Power of the Dog won this category at both the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globes.

Belfast (+1200) has the third-best odds to win Best Picture. King Richard (+3500) and West Side Story (+3500) round out the top-five and are tied for the fourth-shortest odds. The remaining nominees are all listed at 50-1 or longer odds. Nightmare Alley (+15000) has the longest odds to win Best Picture.
