If you’re looking for a place to gamble in the United States that’s east of the Mississippi River, then Atlantic City offers more casinos in one place than anywhere else. But this doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for every gambler. You need to consider more than just where the most casinos are located.

I’m not trying to keep you from visiting Atlantic City. It’s a great place to gamble, and has plenty of choices for slot machines, casino games, betting on sports, and poker action.

But you also need to think about the 11 reasons on this page why Atlantic City might not be your best gambling choice.

1 – Online Casinos in New Jersey

You don’t have to go all the way to Atlantic City to gamble. You can gamble at New Jersey online casinos approved by the state to offer internet-based play. You don’t have to live in New Jersey either; you just have to be located in the state when you play.

You can play almost all of the same games online that you can play in the land-based casinos in Atlantic City. Even if you’re in Atlantic City itself, it’s worth checking out the online casino options.

2 – Better Casinos Closer to Home

It depends on where you live but, for most gamblers, there are plenty of good casino options closer to home than Atlantic City. And the truth is that Foxwoods is as close to many gamblers as Atlantic City is, and Foxwoods is quite a gambling complex.

If you’re west of the Mississippi river, Las Vegas is closer and has more casinos.

Even if one of the casinos that are closer to you isn’t as nice as the ones in Atlantic City, how much better does a casino need to be to save the time and cost of going on a long trip?

3 – Travel Is an Issue

Have you ever tried to plan the travel required to get to Atlantic City? Of course, you can certainly get there. Plenty of people go to Atlantic City every year.

But it may not a simple as getting to many other casinos, depending on where you live. One of the easiest ways to travel to Atlantic City is by bus, but this takes longer than most forms of travel. In fact, bus trips to Atlantic City are a popular two- or three-day trip from many places in the East.

You also have to consider the cost associated with travel. How much does it cost for you to travel to the casino closest to you in comparison to travelling to Atlantic City.

4 – Too Many Senior Citizens

Speaking of bus trips, senior citizens usually make up the majority of people on the busses that run into and out of Atlantic City every day. I don’t have anything against senior citizens. I’m going to be one sooner than I’d like to think about! But some people don’t enjoy spending time around them when they’re gambling. It’s definitely a different vibe than Las Vegas, where most casinos on the Strip cater to younger populations.

If you don’t enjoy gambling with senior citizens, then Atlantic City might not be on the top of your list. But you’re going have to deal with them in every casino, unless you play online. It helps to gamble late at night, too, because the crowd tends to be younger.

5 – Better Sports Betting Options

New Jersey was one of the first states to legalize sports betting, so you can easily find places to bet in Atlantic City. But this doesn’t mean that AC is the best city to place bets on sporting events.

When New Jersey legalized sports betting, they made sure that the state got a cut of revenue. This means it costs the sportsbooks more to operate that are licensed by the state than the popular online sportsbooks that don’t have to pay a cut of revenue.

You need to do your due diligence to make sure it’s legal and safe before you do it, but placing bets online is usually a better option than traveling to Atlantic City.

6 – Online Poker in New Jersey

Instead of traveling all of the way to Atlantic City to find a good poker game, why not take a look at the online poker rooms regulated in New Jersey. Just like the online casino options, you don’t have to be a resident of the state. You just need to be located in the state when you play.

Of course, there are also other real money online poker options available to players in most other states, so you don’t even have to travel to New Jersey to play online.

And poker is still quite popular, so there are many poker rooms around the United States. Odds are that some of these land-based poker rooms are closer to you than Atlantic City.

7 – Not Enough Entertainment

Some of the Atlantic City casinos have live entertainment, but it’s far from the entertainment capital of the world. You can find plenty of entertainment options in every big city in the US.

But people go to Atlantic City to gamble. You can find other things to do in the city, like strolling along the boardwalk and watching a show at a casino. Just keep in mind that few people go to Atlantic City for entertainment alone.

8 – Wandering off the Boardwalk Can Be Dangerous

I’m not trying to scare you away from Atlantic City. When you stay on the boardwalk and close to the main casinos, the city is as safe as other tourist destinations in the United States. One of the mistakes people make when visiting Atlantic City is wandering too far from the main areas, there are some parts of the city that aren’t as safe.

Crowded Atlantic City Boardwalk

This is also true in places like Las Vegas, but it doesn’t change the facts. If you’re not careful, you can get into a bad situation. And a bad situation can certainly ruin your trip. You might be able to travel to a casino closer to home that’s safer than traveling to Atlantic City to gamble.

9 – You Don’t like Sand

You can avoid the sand while you’re in Atlantic City, but it is a city that’s on the ocean. If you spend any time on the boardwalk, you’re going to have to deal with some sand.

Of course, some people enjoy walking on the beach and running their toes through the sand, and you can’t really experience this in too many casino destinations. Atlantic City is one of the best places to visit if you want to spend your day on the beach and your nights gambling.

10 – You Don’t Like the Ocean

My wife loves the ocean, and I love gambling. So, Atlantic City is one of the few places where we can go that has something we both love. But I personally don’t enjoy the ocean at all.

Atlantic City Beach and Pier

If we travel together, Atlantic City is always a place we consider. But if I’m traveling by myself to gamble, I don’t often choose to go to Atlantic City. There are a long list of places that I prefer, including casinos closer to where I live and Las Vegas, of course.

11 – It’s the Winter

If it’s during the winter months, I don’t recommend going to Atlantic City. New Jersey is far enough north that they get some bad weather in the winter. While it usually doesn’t interrupt travel for too long, a bad storm can trap you in AC or keep you from traveling to the next place when you plan to.

The winter can also be quite cold, and the wind coming in off the ocean can be brutal. The worst months are January and February, but December and March can be cold as well. If you’re planning a trip to Atlantic City, I recommend the late spring, summer, and fall months.

Should you go to Atlantic City for your next gambling trip or find a place closer to home? Only you can decide if AC is your best option, but this list of 11 reasons why Atlantic City might not be your best choice on this page can help you decide.

If you decide to visit Atlantic City, I recommend avoiding the winter months. It can get cold in New Jersey in the winter, and the wind off the ocean can make it feel colder than it really is. Enjoy the summer sun by this boardwalk gambling destination, and you might just hit it big!
